Hi All-

It has been a long while (it is nice to be back) even if I am in dire need of help.

Bottomline I still have my TR2AP but all of a sudden my computer is so slow pretty much out of nowhere.  I did nt load anything up recently so it is surprising.  It really gets slow when I do things in control panel like display properties.  I also tried to check disk on c drive and the partioned d drive and it actual gives me an error that it cannot complete it. 

I am not sure whats wrong so this is what I have tried so far (thinking maybe it spyware???)

(1) did AV scan with trendmicro (free website)
(2) Norton Scan AV 2005
(3) did a scan with adwareSE (found somethings)
(4) scan with spybot (found somethings)
(5) did a trojan scan with tds3 (didnt find any)

Not sure what to do?  I could do a reinstall but i dont have the time or the heart.

A system restore sounds like the best option at this point.  You could also manually look into your registry to see if anything is trying to hide itself in your system folder:
-In your start menu, click run
-Type in REGEDIT and hit enter.
-In the dropdown menus to the right, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/RUN.  This shows a fairly comprehensive list of the processes that start when you boot up your machine, even those that may be hiding.  Delete anything that you don’t need.  If you don’t know what something does, search for it at http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ccapp/.

i actually forgot that was the first thing i tried!  I went back a month.  Should i go further back?

From what you’ve said, especially with chkdsk finding errors (assuming you’re talking about the disk check that you reboot into and happens before Windows loads), I don’t think it’s spyware. It sounds like classic hard drive death throes, especially if you hear any thunking noises as you try to read data. I’d save what data you still can ASAP.

I could be one of many things or a variety of things.

1. Spyware
2. Failing HDD
3. Heavily Fragmented HDD
4. Corrupted System files

The first thing is like what Drachen says and backup everything that you absolutely need. I’m thinking it’s probably better to attempt a full system restore just to be safe. This will also let you know if you have a failing HDD condition. If a fully restored system is dog slow then you know you probably have a failing HDD. If it’s fast and snappy then at least everything is working and you’ll just need to reinstall apps. Either way, you’ll know what the problem is.

I also highly suggest trying out Microsoft’s AntiSpyware application. It’s more thorough than SpyBot and Adaware (in my experience) and can find stuff that neither can find. So, it’s worth trying that one out too.

Thanks for the quick replies.  I will try the ms spyware software!  I will also back everything up asap. 

I was trying the check disk in normal mode and it wouldnt work not at bootup or anything.  I did manage to go into safe mode and i did a check disk and it worked on c but not on d (does that say anything or you still think the HD is about to go?)

I am just afraid to do a reinstall because i am not going to know how to put my corp vpn back on, setting out look up again with my .pst my wep encryption for my router etc etc etc

i said screw it doing the reinstall.  so far the drive seems faster but after i load all my stuff back who knows.

Install MS AntiSpyware before you install everything else. It will let you know when programs are trying to install stuff in your registry startup items. It’s good for keeping an eye on programs that try to sneaky stuff into your registry.

If you try to do a disk check, does it complete properly now?

your not going to believe this.  i did a reinstall and now i am having other problems where i am not able to dl sp2.  i am getting the following error 80072ee2 (which i looked up) but the problem is i am no expert and reading all that doesnt help me. i dont understand this.

in reading about the error it talks about (timing out)  i actually got it sp2 to dl (everytime it stopped) i would just restart it. it took about 30 times and i got the entire file. i am hoping after sp2 is on it will fix this problem. any chance? also if i do another reinstall will that fix it?

Yea those HD errors are not good… Hard Disk defect is a possiblity!

I am having a hell of a time with this new install now.  I cannot get MS to dl anything with ease.  I am going to do another reinstall. 

what do i choose from the dvd “exactly” as the reinstall method?
