I have a PCG-TR1MP which has worked perfectly for 18 months.

Last night I was watching a DVD on it, stopped halfway and powered down. My hard disk was very close to full, and I was doing some file copying in the background which might have completely filled it up.

Woke up this morning and when I try to power up I get “Operating system not found”. When I try a boot disk it says “No hard disk found”. And the BIOS isn’t showing any primary IDE. (CD-ROM as secondary.) The hard disk seems to be making no effort to spin (i.e., I hear nothing).

My warranty is out and I wouldn’t want to send it for repair unless I absolutely have to.

Any suggestions?

you could try resetting the bios (the pin hole on the back near the windows sticker) to attempt to get the computer to re-find the HD.  If that fails then I guess your HD is most likely dead so you’ll need to buy a new one.

The HD in our TRs is the 1.8” size but annoying they randomly put either Toshiba or Hitachi drives in and they use different connectors so you’ll need to find out which you have and order a replacement.  If you don’t already know which you have I guess you’ll have to just read it off the drive itself.  Follow the guide here to see how to open the TR and access the harddrive.

I’ve ordered and received a 40G hard disk, I’m going to try installing it this evening :shock: Will post back with details.

So… the installation went well :D (Well, it seems to anyway).

I got a 40G hard disk from http://www.scan.co.uk [ http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=165197 ] It was £98 including delivery in the UK. Not sure this is the cheapest but I compared it to a few others and seemed so.

Anyway, I used the instructions Matt linked to ... then when I got to the hard disk, followed my nose.

Actually, it was quite a smooth process - though I could have done without it. At least I got an extra 10G and a clean install of all my software. (And my printer finally works through my wireless network - yey!)

Cool am pleased that you’ve sorted it all.  Now you’ve just got to find some stuff to fill that extra 10gig
