The major gadget blogs are reporting on a new HD-based network walkman from Sony, the NW-HD5. So far only Euro release info is known, but it seems likely there’ll be a worldwide release. 55.9 x 89.3 x 14.4mm and 126 grams, ATRAC3, MP3, WMA, and WAV files. 40 hour batt life.
Gosh…. the design is so unbecoming of Sony. Anyhow, it sure looks like a “photoshop” picture. In addition, the UI does not resemble anything of what Sony has now.
By the way, I received the blue RH10 a few weeks back and it’s marvelous.

Sweet! I’m going to Japan on the 13th and plan to pick one up while I’m there. Is it true you can charge it via the USB port?

No, you still charge via the cradle or direct AC input. So, which color do you plan to bring back?

The UI of the NW-HD5 has been completely revamped. Now it operates with an operation key and the four surrounding buttons under the liquid crystal. The retrieval mode prepares five modes of Artist/Album/Track/Genre/Playlist. In addition, the retrieval mode has been improved by strengthening of the playlist function and incorporation of the initial search function – “one step search function.” This function allows the user to return to main menu by a simple menu button.

Really? According to this page, the RH10 can use USB bus power. It more or less says when transferring it uses USB bus power and in addition, also charges with USB bus power. They recommend using the cradle to charge though.
You are quite right gr00yOne. I am mistaken. I checked and yes, we can charge the unit itself via the USB port to PC. The battery charges automatically once a USB connection is made with the PC.
My phone is charged via USB, and it’s a mixed bag to be sure. In order to be charged via PC, the phone USB driver must be installed on the PC and the phone must be detected as a USB device before it starts charging. It charges about 2-3 times faster plugged into the power brick than into the PC. I also found out that if you can’t boot the phone, you can’t charge the unit via PC at all.

Eew!!! That’s really weird. I have a generic USB-to-Sony Ericsson cable that charges my phone and it actually works extremely well. No drivers needed and i seems to be rapid charging as well. Of course, I have the “basic” Z600 though so it’s probably not very power hungry.

Sweet! That’s a useful feature for me since I like to carry around the least amount of AC adapters as possible. It’s cool that it has the battery attachment pod as well just in case you can’t charge it anywhere. I was extremely disappointed with the MZ-NH1 in that you had to charge it in the cradle (not even direct charging possible) and it had no attachment pod. The weight and feel of it was very nice though.
