My net has been down for a few days and since yesterday norton had been popping up some message regarding some connectivity issue. It would also always pop up the box informing me that eDonkey was trying to access the net and that whether it should allow or block it. I thought it was related to my net not working. But, today after the net started working, I just couldn’t get online. I couldn’t even access my router. When I typed 192.168.1.1 in my browser it would try the IE search and then the page cannot be displayed page would show up. Surprisingly, I could still connect to my TR from the desktop. When I tried pinging some website, it gave me a response (not a timeout) but instead of saying “pinging xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with…”

it displayed “pinging <some weird characters> with….”

Even eDonkey would report that it was connected, but I couldn’t upload or download anything.

Finally I decided to just do a format. But does anyone know why this was happening?  :?  :?

yeah here in the UK, i realised yesterday th enet seemed sluggish, yahoo msn etc… weird

eDonkey?  I tried using this a while ago and it fried my system so badly I had to do a restore.

eDonkey was certainly not the reason. I’ve been using it for quite sometime now and it hasn’t created any problems for me.

Spyware. Some lovely piece of software either fucked with your hosts file, replaced your winsock dll, modified your eDonkey install and/or installed BHOs in IE. If you want to continue using IE as your main browser, I’d recommend looking at my other posts on anti-spyware programs.

Also be careful of the shareware programs that self-update….they may not have given you problems in the past, but spyware can always be snuck into   a program during an “update.”

I don’t think e-donkey does that, but something to keep an eye out for.

Is it me, or does anyone get pissed off about every program wanting to “phone home” to the mother ship?  IF i want the damn update, i’ll go to the website to get it.\

It’s not just you.  Ever since I installed Zone Alarm Pro my modem kicks in every half hour.  I have turned off auto updates but it doesn’t seem to help.

My net stopped working on Sun evening and then started working nearly 48 hours later on Tues evening. I was then able to browse the net and download stuff as usual. I didn’t do much browsing though and certainly no installation from the net during that time. Early Wednesday morning again it conked off. I think I started getting those messages from Norton sometime on Wed evening. Anyway’s I did a full system scan using Norton Antivirus and then used spybot search and destroy and adaware to remove all adware which wasn’t much.

The net started working today morning and then I found out about all the stuff that I mentioned in my first post.

Reason for net working intermittently: The signal levels were not right…the guy told me it should have been below -5 (I guess he meant above -5 since he said -4, -3 etc are ok), so he installed some kind of splitter to keep those levels in check.

Sounds like spyware to me. But why would u ever check a connection to the internet with a p2p program is kinda dumb.

I missed something here. Who are you talking about?

Well I just mentioned it because eDonkey was running in the background. I wasn’t checking my connection using it.

oh shit, I forgot to add something very important…

I was trying to defragment my hdd using diskkeeper and it refused to run since it’s service had stopped. I restarted the system but still the servcie didn’t start up….even manually going under administrator tools->services didn’t help. I then tried removing it and reinstalling it but while trying to make some change to the system it informed that it couldn’t since I (the admin) might not have sufficient previliges.

Is there some net service which this mysterious thing might have screwed up in a similar way?
