I asked the girl…they have over 50 on display with another 100 or so in the back…they sold about 40ish since release. They have every game in stock, over 10 copies of each…

We do the 3rd most business in the state of Colorado for target stores. We received 40 PSP’s for the launch and we only sold 10 at yesterday. During Christmas we had people lining up everyday, to see if we got any DS, PS2 or Xbox in. We had only a handful of people really ask about the PSP, it seems to me that most non-hardcore gamers really didn’t know the system was coming out.
I don’t want to say I told you so…price point…eek.
Sales figures will be out this Monday they suspect…
Personally, I want one, but the price totally drove me away. $250 to play games in the car? granted, i realize its capabilities are sooo much more than any other game system out there…but still, i think Sony over-estimated what the AVERAGE consumer wants. A cheap, game-boy-esque game player for themselves. That does NOT cost $250 dollars.
My Wal-Mart still has about 3 in stock last time I checked Friday night. At the night of launch, they had about 4 boxes of 12-each out in the register to hand out to those standing in line (including me—there were only 3 others in line!!), and a total of 86 units? I think?
Anyways, I love PSP; it’s a great little machine, a real eye-catcher, and so far, I have one game (Twisted Metal: HO—a friend let me borrow MG:A, which I’m not too big on the card sequence of the game). It’s been more of a media player so far, and I’ve been constantly playing MP3’s and watching the Spiderman movie.
If you want to know the truth, however, I still find my DS is a whole lot funner system to play on—especially with the controls, since they’re not too space-fitted and crammed in the system. When the Play Yan releases in America then I’m sure I’ll start using the DS more often as my media player. It’s just a little “scary” carrying around my PSP everywhere at the price I paid for it, vulnerable to the dangers of the outside.
But I like the PSP—it definitely has potential. Unless Sony is going to reel in the games, however, DS may just turn out superior this fall for value and gaming (releases, GoldenEye: RA, Ages of Empire II DS, Animal Crossing DS w/ full online play hosted by GameSpy, Sonic DS, Meteos, Metroid Prime: FH, etc).
I know I’m most especially looking forward to GTA PSP—and that’s reason enough for $250 purchase of PSP!!!!
Although I can’t find an online link, our local news has stated Sony has sold over 1,000,000 PSPs thusfar. So, if this is true, not only did they send way more then 1,000,000 units, but Spiderman is not limited to the first 1,000,000 either.
I just got back from Wal-Mart Supercenter (Conway, AR). OMGosh!!! They have 12 PSPs behind the glass, and a full stock of PSP games, as if they have a never-ending replenishing supply!!
I read at IGN that CBS did say 1 million units were sold. But that’s really in speculation right now. They could have misinterpreted it that Sony shipped 1 million units, or that 1 million PSPs have been sold to the retailers (technically, retail stores have to buy the products from the manufacturer), but haven’t sold all to the customers yet.
I highly doubt that the entire stock of PSPs have been sold out—but it’s possible. It’s just a little hard to believe considering the PS2 sold about 900,000 in the first 24 hours, and it was a console. But the PSP is still a very popular system!
Retail sales are kind of screwy and they tend to overemphasize the ship numbers. RIAA-certified records (gold, platinum, ect) for example are based on ship numbers, as are bestselling book lists. This sort of thing, particularly in the book world, leads to some rather creative ways to artificially boost chart position. I wouldn’t be surprised if CBS’s reporter confused the two and that IGN is repeating the mistake.
One week after the $249 PSP package was launched in the United States, American Technology Research found that only 50 of 150 stores surveyed nationally in the last two days were sold out. Another 15 stores had three or fewer units left.
McNealy estimated the PSP sold as many as 575,000 units in its first week, with up to 300,000 left in the inventory channel.
Sony hasn’t released official #s yet…I assume because they are not as strong as hoped.
BTW, Toys R Us is selling returned PSPs for $199.99
They got me for 3 - started with 1 then 1 for each son (2) then one for me. Playing a RPG “legends” - online with my sons - wifi - way way cool. WIll make 7 hours go by fast in the car to tampa tomorrow
