[quote author=“writetovarun”]Im going to wait till these things have the ability to write on UMDs as well. So i can copy movies and/or games plus music. I dont think it should be much time till blank UMDs start to retail, that’d be wicked for storing movies coz frankly PSP is by far the best looking video player ( not exactly at the moment but .. ) available.
Definitely. If Sony decided to open UMD up they would make a lot of friends in the public and the media. However, the main argument against it is that it’s only 1.8GB. In a few years flash memory will make that 1.8GB seem kinda small.
[quote author=“jashsu”][quote author=“gr00vy0ne”]I’m waiting for the truly unique games to come out that aren’t ports of already existing franchises.
Metal Gear Acid is pretty unique, and definitely not a port of any previous MGS. If you’re a Metal Gear fan who also happens to enjoy strat rpgs and card collecting games, I think I can safely say theres nothing else like it. It’s not canonical Metal Gear, thats for sure.
Might be a good idea to hold off for a bit simply because theres a lot of talk about dead pixels. My guess is they compromised on manufacturing QA in order to boost launch quantities.
Yeah, it’s unique but it’s not a “must have” type of title. I’m not a huge fan of MG to begin with. My favorite one is the original game on the first Nintendo system.
What is the pixel policy on the PSP? I know the DS is simply one bad pixel. You can call them and they’ll arrange to have it fixed. That’s a pretty decent policy.

I think in terms of storing movies, they’re pretty much covered with the memory stick. Opening up UMD might be opening up a can of worms for them. Sticking to the proprietary game disc has staved Game Cube piracy off for a quite a while (though that might also be in part due to less demand to pirate GC).
It probably won’t be long before mass-pressed UMD is reverse engineered in Asia for companies like Datel, but UMD burners are probably out of the question unless Sony officially endorses opening it up. Just my 2 c.

Supposedly Sony themselves won’t accept returns on dead pixels, and it’s probably going to be the same situation at brick’n'mortars. If you have an excessive amount like 8+ or an entire row they’ll probably exchange it though. It’s not as generous as Nintendo’s policy but then again the PSP’s display is much larger and finer.
P.s. Maybe its time to create a PSP forum… this thread alone is probably longer than the entire U forum

That is what I heard as well, which is also why I took the $25 warranty. According to the salesman, it covers dead pixels…as few as 1. Since the exchanges will be made in-store, as long as they will replace it, I am happy.
If Groovy creates a section…I suggest 3 parts…General PSP, Games, Accessories.
I played NFS for about 30 mins while waiting for class to begin (I was in the halls) and a bunch of people were asking about it, wanting to touch it. Everyone was impressed but the price made them pull back a bit. One girl said she saw it on the news and was happy to see it in person.
On another note, NFS froze on me once, I had to shut down and turn it on again. Then another time NFS failed to start and the PSP just shut itself off. NFS is the game i’ve played the most so I don’t know if it’s the game..the PSP…or something else.
I like the NFSU series, but I can’t help but feel it’s just a port, so I never really considered it, but thanks for the input anyways. :D
Well, it is a port, but then so is Wipeout, no? In a sense, RR is as well…so will Gran Turismo…I think. Honestly, I’m dying to see how they will do GTA…I can’t see the game as it is on such a small screen.
I haven’t played NFS U2, only the first underground…so I see improvements, but they may have been in U2.
I guess I meant that the console version/PC version of NFSU seems to be pretty similar to the PSP version.
But there are enough changes in Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racer from past versions to make it stand out on its own. I’m just afraid that NFSU Rivals doesn’t have that quality, but I’ve never really tried it, so I can’t knock it.

I play far more automotive games the any other…I’ve purchased the original PS for GT, the XBox for OutRun2…you get the point. I don’t want you to go out and pay $50 and be dissapointed…but being honest, it’s the one that I think is most true to a real racing genre. My only gripe…and it was similar to the console version…once you spin out, it’s nearly impossible to win again…its just so hard to catch up from a dead stop.
how much did everyone pay for their psp(s)? i got mine for $229.99 from bestbuy. for some reason it keep showing a $20 discount in my basket. the total was $265.95 with next day shipping & tax.

$250 + tax + $25 warranty. Best Buy had a coupon, as does buy.com (6%) but I wanted it in-hand so I paid a bit more. What’s $20 when you’re $700 in?
A lot of people have dead or stuck pixels… what about you guys?
I think the stuck/lazy pixels are much more common then the dead pixels. Most of them only show up on all black screens. One place I found to kind of test this is to go to the “about PSP” in the system settings… and someone told me that the beginning of spiderman is all black.
Anyway, I thought i had no problem pixels until I looked at an all-black screen… i then saw I had 3 faint lazy pixels (show up faint gray/white only in black).
someone on the playstation forums made this set of jpgs to test dead pixels:
Picked up this accessory pack…I think it actually has three things i’ll use.
6 UMD cases…a must IMO…if you have more then one UMD.
Car charger…
AA battery pack…4 AA’s provide power to the PSP.
A note is included with the AA adapter…you can’t use it if your PSP still has battery power. It won’t charge the PSP. No mention of how long it lasts. I will run a test tonight, remove the battery and see how long it lasts.
My main concern was the cases (selling for over $2 each on ebay) and the car charger. The other Mad Katz kits come with headphones and cheap cases, and other things i would never use.

very true. it’s just that i’m already $1200+ in for my treo 650 plus accessories/sofwares (still need my 2gb card @ $280).. just trying to save a few bucks especially since i didn’t need it in-hand.

Totally understand…that’s just how I justified the $20…still not sure how I justified the PSP overall…lol.
