Don’t worry. Sony Repair service will take care of your notebook and make sure they send you a working one. And yes they do need the whole notebook in order to do any repairs. I remember reading a post here that they even replaced an LCD that had an air bubble in it and the owner did not really request that (Ibelieve it was groovy again). So just relax and trust that everything should be OK.
The lady who I spoke with on Friday (from Sony support) said I would be receiving this box to send my laptop in this Monday. Well, it’s now Tuesday night and I have not received this box yet. She made it loud and clear that the box would definitely arrive on Monday, so I’m starting to wonder when I will be getting that box from them. Should I wait a day or two before calling Sony up about this, or should I be patient and just wait it out? I don’t like the second option because this is my main computer that used to have all the software I used on a day-to-day basis.
Generally speaking, it does show up the next day. They typically ship if via Fedex Overnight shipping. I would just call them to double check that they sent it out and if you could have the tracking number. Occasionally, it’s the shipper’s fault so you should see if you can track it.
I know this is probably out of Sony’s hands, but after speaking with a support person this morning I learned that my box WAS delivered on 3/21 and was signed by an “R. Henry.” Who the hell is that?!? My name is Chris Rhoads… not R. Henry! Why in the world would FedEx need to have a signature for an empty box? Yes, I know that FedEx might not know that it’s an empty box, but would this really need a signature?
So, now I have to wait another “1-2 business days” for this box. I tell ya… this is the worst support I’ve ever seen in the computer industry. I had three IBM notebooks in the past, and not once did I ever have a problem with them. I have my first Sony Vaio notebook, and the hard drive dies on me well before my 1-yr anniversary with it.

Yes, it does need a signature. The problem is that FedEx delivery people (as well as other delivery people and cable/phone install people) lie when they fuck up or can’t make the delivery/appointment. We had a router delivered to our office in the lower 900s on Broadway. It never arrived. According to FedEx, it was signed for by the guy that normally signs for the packages. The problem is that he never saw the router. The FedEx guy often signs *for him* and leaves the package at the office if he’s not there. (we have kind of a late work start time) Then FedEx claimed that it was sent to 90 Broadway and supposedly tried to get it back. This is bullshit for so many reasons. The only thing I wonder is if our stolen router was sold on eBay before we got the replacement shipped to us. This is just one example of why I hate FedEx.

Hmm funny FedEx has been good to me all the time, ever since my company made me shipping manager 1.5yrs ago.. they always come on time.. and if not really early.. maybe it depends on your location..
[quote author=“dustrho”]Okay, now I am REALLY pissed off.

Not that I’m siding with Sony but it’s not their fault in this case. It’s Fedex’s fault so you can’t really say it’s the worst support for “Sony”. The only other thing they could possibly do is use a different shipper or send a Sony technician to your door.
Oddly enough, Fedex in my area is amazing. Always on time and they refuse to leave stuff if I don’t sign for it. Luckily, the World Service Center hub, is a few blocks away so I can always go there to pick up my stuff. UPS in my area is bad though…they’ll just leave stuff without signatures. Tsk. Tsk.

In a way it is Sony’s fault. Sony picked FedEx to be the shipper… not me. When I worked in sales for a very larger corporate computer supply company, if something went wrong with one of my customer’s orders (no matter if it was wrong items that shipped or problems with the shipping of the order) it was MY fault. Not the shipping company’s fault, not the people in my company’s warehouse fault, it was MY fault. I was the main point of contact, and if something went wrong I was the one to be blamed.
I’m not saying Sony’s support should be 100% responsible for the shipping of that box, but it’s their policy to ship an empty box instead of the hard drive replacement. They chose to use FedEx, which I absolutely hate with the biggest passion for a NUMBER of reasons (not going there!). If it were up to me I would have told them to ship the damn thing just Priority Mail, because that way I know for sure that I would have received that box by now. Instead, I have to wait another 1-2 days to get this empty box, ship out my laptop, and then wait an addition 7-10 business days to receive my fixed laptop. And finally, I have to install the OS and other software once I get it.
Why couldn’t they just ship me a new hard drive, and let me replace the hard drive myself? To me, that would have been the easiest solution of them all. Or, I could argue the point that Circuit City’s extended warranty sucks ass, since I can’t use it until AFTER the manufacturer’s one-year warranty has expired.

Stupid!
I won’t argue that it is ultimately Sony’s fault; however, the reality is that they shipped it. It’s not like they didn’t ship out anything at all. And for everyone that hates Fedex, there’s an equal and vocal amount of people who hate UPS, DHL, etc.
It’s pretty obvious why they don’t ship out the HDD to you. It wasn’t designed to be user installable. Some companies might send you a drive if the hard disk can be accessed with a single panel and you don’t have to get anywhere near the rest of the notebook. Just look at the number of screws you need to take out and all the other parts that must be removed. The entire motherboard gets exposed during the process. Most people (outside of these forums) would likely screw something up causing even more damage and costs to Sony.
Also, sending you the HDD directly won’t make things any easier. You wouldn’t get it in the first place. Good ole R. Henry will get it instead and you’ll have to call Sony to send another one anyways.

Yeah same here.. FedEx near Maxella is really awesome! always on time.. and you’re right about UPS in our area.. but it’s not that bad.. 8)

Maybe they just really suck in NY. I’d say lower midtown but I’ve had FedEx leave $2k worth of computer equipment on my parents’ front porch without a signature… while someone was home.

They all suck, but just the sheer number of times FedEx has screwed up and the fact (with the Memphis thing) that they nearly cost me the deal on my apartment, I have a particular ire for them.

You should ask Fedex for the contact information of the receiver associated with the tracking # given to you by Sony. That way you’ll know if it was Sony’s fault or Fedex’s.

Funny you mention that. I asked the Sony rep for the tracking number so that I could contact FedEx directly, and she said that she’s not able to give that out over the phone. WTF is up with that?!? It’s just a tracking number. It got me thinking that THEY (aka Sony) dropped the ball on this one, and NOT FedEx.
