Interestingly, SonyStyle Canada has the software available for a pre-order (April 14th release). There are some pics too and some more info.
I wish they also offered a download for the software.

Tempted to pick it up when its released. In my opinion though, this should be bundled free with the LocationFree tvs rather than sold separately for $150.
So really, all you need is the base-station. I will be looking for one on ebay that someone lost or broke the LCD display and want’s to dump the station.
I very much doubt that you would get lifetime upgrades on it. People like me and you spend $$$$ on the top line VAIOs and the support we get from Sony is very limited.
However, users of Media Center VAIOs with 2004 edition get a 2005 upgrade, plus the latest upgrades to Click to DVD and DVGate Plus for only $9.99 :!:
So you never know with Sony…
Sony posted a manual online for the software (“Locationfree TV Player”) to be released in April and I have learnt from it that you need to have the following components to set it all up to work on your computer:
1. Software
2. Base Station
3. Your LF-X1 or LF-X5 Panel
With the help of the Panel you can register up to 4 computers to the Base Station and the reigistration process cannot bypass the panel.
So for those of you guys who thought of getting just the Base Station from Ebay, you do have to have the LCD Panel as well. :?

I wonder what it is that can only be done on the panel… I hope future revisions of the base station will be able to get around this, because tying the locationfree concept to the panel is really a bad idea. Lets hope that lower priced psp version won’t require the panel.
See, you do all your configurations for the Base Station through the Panel. So that what ties your panel and the base. If you have just the panel and the software on your computer, the panel will not recognize your PC because it needs to be pre-configured: option -> Add additional monitors/panels to the Base Station or something like that.
Once I actually get the software, I will definitely confirm that fact.
I hope PSP and Locationfree marriage is gonna be pain-free.
P.S. I just got a 7” LF-X5 and it looks like a cute wide-screen LCD thingy, definitely more portable than the 12” I talked about in my review.

I’m really tempted to pick up a LF-X5 but my common sense is telling me to just wait for the second gen base stations that’ll probably be suited for the PSP… what do you think?

I’m in the same situation. They are going for $500-750 on ebay…very tempting…
I wish I knew what the next generation would have in store. Supposedly the Base Station & the Monitor are upgradable: they both have ports that Sony is silent about and I am positive they are used for upgrades. The source code is also available to public but I have no knowledge in that area.
SINCE today I have been using the smaller one (LF-X5), I really like the feel of it ‘n portability! The 12” one definitely should stay at home.
I believe Circuit City has them on display now, so if interested - check it out.
Well,
Sony once in a while decides to be nice and is offering the Locationfree TV software for PC on a 30-day trial basis. It is available here http://12.155.226.67/owners/default.asp
I am gonna try it out and let you know how it works.
Kinda excited here….
