Just wondering if any you have heard a clicking noise while the X505 is on. I am hearing this noise whether I am doing something on it or not. Other than the clicking noise, it’s really quiet. I have a Japanese version and I’ve only had it for about a week!... My suspicions tell me it could be the hard drive??? Thanks in advance for any help.
My X505 is very queit, sometimes I even wonder if it is still running or not. There is a click from time to time but it definitely sounds like a head parking in the HD. If it does clicking all the time, then you should worry some about it. I remember reading a review from some magazine and they mentioned the “clicking all the time problem”, which then was confirmed as a bad hard drive.
[quote author=“Drachen”]Relax. If it’s just one click every once in a while, it’s the hard drive parking the head. This is normal.
The x505 doesn’t click anywhere near as much as my TR did.
Blknight - I would backup your data, then run a harddrive stress test….let it run for 24 hours or so if you can, if it doesn’t fail under pressure you should be ok. I would always make sure you backup after anything important.
Thanks all… I just want to err on the side of caution. So… tifosiv122, I’ll follow your advice and I will post again when I’ve let it run for a day or so.
hopefully it’s just the hard drive. i just got my x505 two weeks ago. i have the zp (american version). i haven’t had any problems with excessive clicking. blknight, keep us informed.
Well, after running for about 36 hours straight…it is still making the clicking noise. I have been using it with no problems, minus the annoying click. I will give a couple of more weeks or if I get fed up which ever comes first and then take it in for service.
i agree with vaiofreak. if you think the clicking is excessive, get it checked out.
i had my x505 out for a final (open notes, book, computer) in one of my mba classes tonight. it impressed many fellow students. it truly is a great laptop for students. fyi, to update a few folks, i had a ten-key attached to it to crunch some numbers, but have yet to get a mouse.
plus: check the archives, there have been numerous reports of hard drive failure after constant clicking noises have been heard. plagued the TR 1.8” i think?
Well, sorry it took so long for an update on my clicking noise problem. I finally took it back to the store Monday and the rep stated r”... I could not detect the noise.’ I promptly explained to him that he would not be able to just pick it up and hear it, especially amongst the noise in the store. After, hmming and hawwing for about 20 minutes the clerk finally suggested that they send it back to the Sony dealer because he could not find anything wrong. So, I of course agreed for my sanity and off it went…for about a four week turnaround. Needless to say I will be on a business trip then when I could have used it a lot. Oh well…such is life. I will again keep you all updated when it returns.

Wow. Where do you live that they have a four week turn-around!

I hate to tell you this, but I don’t think there was anything wrong with your hard drive. A failing hard drive making the dreaded clunking noises is usually associated with performance (freezing) problems and error messages (either file errors or just wacky things happening because a .dll here or there was corrupted or missing) and is stuff that a 36-hour stress test should have revealed.

I would normally agree except no other X505 owners report hearing the clicking that loud. Of course it’s subjective, but it doesn’t click anywhere near as much as my TR did.
tifosiv122: I thought the four week turn around was slow too, especially since I live in Japan!
Drachen: My thoughts tell me that as well, however, I would rather be on the safe side, it’s not costing me anything now so why not send it back to them. I only have my expierences and I have never heard any laptop I’ve owned (3) make that noise.
