This is bad news for Sony, not so much because of the man’s ethnicity (honestly once you get beyond the whole can’t-dance thing, we white people aren’t that bad) but because of his former occupation. He’s an entertainment executive. I wouldn’t trust any entertainment executive, especially anyone in charge of CBS until the mid-90s, to run a consumer electronics conglomerate. Sony has even admitted that their publishing arms hamstrung their ability to sell their digital music players competitively.

Well put. That’s my main concern as well. This guy’s track record isn’t exactly stellar. Unless he has some solid vision of how he can convince the entertainment arm of the company to be more open to non-draconian DRM measures then I don’t know how much of a difference this will make.

Entertainment is first “what have you done for me lately” and secondly “what have you done spectacularly in the past”. This guy was in charge of Sony Pictures while they had the two white-hot Spider-Man films. They’ll still roll out the red carpet for you if you had one Big Thing even if you haven’t done anything for the past few years.
