Hi all - been away for a while, but now I’m looking to upgrade my beloved TR1MP to a T1XP.

I know the T2’s are out in a month or so in the UK, but that aside, what I want to know is the upgrade from 900mhz to 1.1Ghz (T1) noticeable?

I could use the DVD writer / larger hard disk, and I believe the T is a little smaller than the TR.

As you know I do a lot of music recording etc and whilst the TR1 has been great up to now, I’m starting to reach its limits in terms of how many tracks /effects etc I can have on the go at once - will the ULV Dothan chip in the T1 help with this?

I’ve scoured through the recent posts and wold appreciate any comments from folks who have had TR’s and upgraded to T’s!

And on that note - anyone want to buy a lovely TR1MP? Looking for £850 UK pounds. Mint condition, boxed with receipt. :D

There’s not that much difference between the T and the TR. If you really need more compute power, you need a faster computer - maybe the S. But if you want a cool new computer, then why not a T? It is a very nice machine.

Wadham, don’t you already have an S series laptop?

Yup Drachen, I do have an S1XP, but find the size of the TR/T much more suitable for field work, whereas the S can be a little noisy when recording. I’m considering having a system re-shuffle, and therefore wondered if the extra processor power and HD size etc would be worth going for the T

deichenlaub, your comments were spot on, I guess most normal people would simply upgrade to the S, but since I got my TR last year I have grown very fond of it, and decided to have a dual machine set up. I haven’t owned a desktop pc for a few years now, and the S can handle all my graphics / day to day work, whilst the TR is used for recording audio with my band and a few other things.

I’ve just returned from my local store where I’ve had a good look at a T, and I really think the TR beats it in the looks department, but I’m interested to see if the extra power in the T will be noticeable….

In what ways do you expect the jump from 900Mhz to 1.1Ghz seem noticable?

For example, what do you do on a daily basis that uses 100% of the CPU for a sustained time?

Most of the time, that CPU isn’t going to be running at full speed anyway, especially if it’s running on the battery. IIRC both chips step down to the same power-saving speed steps.

Well, since the topic has been revisited, I did actually buy the T in March /April, just before my huge sale, and I’ve been delighted with it.

May be selling it soon though, as I’ve been using an iMac G5 lately and I just think it’s great (apart from the lousy buzzing fans which Apple seem to want to ignore), and as I only use the T for web programming I may switch to a less powerful powerbook/ibook.

Musicwise - I’ve found the mac much more reliable and easy to use, and its up there with the TR in terms of coolness…

Doh - that was me up above..

Since I’ve been using the T solely for web programming now (been leaning mysql & php etc..) I find I’m runing the screen on low brightness, and the cpu on battery optimised and I’m getting at least 6 hours from the baby.

I seem to have mellowed over the past few months regarding horsepower, as the T (and probably my previous TR) is more than powerful enough to use for my current activities - I guess i just wanted to cover all bases with one machine - games / music and work etc, whereas now I’m not so fussy about the games side of things.

Jesus, that computer looks like it was manufactured 15 years ago.  The return of the mini-notebook my a$$, it looks like the return of 1988.

If someone does pick it up, i would recommend picking up this cell phone to go with it as well:
