Apple is sure moving quickly on updating it’s ipods.
Photo ipod is now 30GB ($350) and 60GB ($450), instead of 40GB ($500) and 60GB ($600).
Apple dropped the 4GB mini to $200. New 6GB is $250.
the regular 40GB ipod is no longer available. the regular 20GB ipod remains at $300.
There were lots of rumors of having the new mini with a color screen, but this doesn’t look like it’s the case. Probably would have pissed off those who got minis over the holidays, including my wife.
Haha…i guess it’s not as thrilling considering all the wild speculation that was going on the last couple of days…hmm…not unlike the ridiculous trade rumors in the NBA.
Well, now there’s iPods for pretty much every price point. I still think they should have got rid of the non-color screen iPods. A 20, 30, 60 line up wouldn’t be so bad.
seriously, i think apple will have color screens in the mini and their standard 20GB model sometime soon. the color irivers and other mp3 players will dictate apple’s strategy.
Wouldn’t colour screens mean a higher drain on battery life?
What would be the point of a colour screen anyhow? The pictures on the colour iPod are pretty much useless. Just curious why that would be a big deal for anybody…?
My 40gb 2ndG ipod has started to grow lots of dust lately, I mean with about 1.5 hours of play time, I’d rather backpack the TR!!! Whenever I travel with an ipod I have to bring a battery pack with extra bats, so the weight comes close to being the same (okay, slight exageration). I love the pod, but unless they fixed the battery problem, they are overrated inmho. ps. anyone know if there is a replacement bat that actually works for 2gs? One other thing that would be nice is if they built wireless into the Pod to work with the Airport, which also is growing fuzz balls in the closet.

And its slower to charge, and bigger/heavier. I would like a color screen, don’t get me wrong, but as it stands I see no reason for it. I wouldn’t use it as a picture viewer. If it played movies…that’s another story. Glad I got my 40 when it was offered, 20 isn’t enough…60 is too much for right now and 30 is cutting it close for me.

Even if I loaded all the music I had on a 4gb mini, I’d have nearly a gb free on it…and that too after most songs that I have are encoded at higher bitrates with a few of them going to the max of 320

My iPod has about 28GB used…thats almost all 128 bit, full albums, perfect rips. I have about 45-50GB of random Mp3s from early Napster days that I am just too lazy to sort through. I keep them just for when I feel like finding an older song or whatever. On most of them I have 3-5 of the same song because there were always problems with those rips.
I used to get a lot of music off napster and mainly audiogalaxy. I formed a group on audiogalaxy and people with music albums used to rip them at 320 kbps and share them…the only thing irritating was getting stuff at 320 kbps and then finding out that some of them had some disturbances in them…like clicks here and there which were introduced during the ripping process.
i bought a shuffle…and since i use mp3s mainly for driving, the lack of a screen is perfect.
as for ipods in general? overhyped, oversaturated, and old. i really think it’s time to move on from the ‘white is the new black’ motto. That was, like, so 2003.
