I use a RJ-45 cable connection which plugs into the internal n/w card on my TR. I want to setup a wireless connection, but i have no idea how to go about this.

How should i proceed? Would i need to connect my RJ-45 cable to an wireless base unit and then take it from there.

Welcome to one of the best forums on the net…..

You’ll need a wirless router which will take the RJ45 from your modem, search the forum for recommendations.  Once you have this, you use the wireless card built into the TR for your wireless connection and bingo you’re away.  Nothing to be afraid of, even I managed to set a network up and I’m no uber geek.

Yes its a great forum. Which wireless router do you use to take in the RJ45. Also which wireless lan to go inside the cardbus slot of the TR? What about access points.. ?

To paraphrase Sun, the router is the access point. Just buy a wireless cable router. You plug the cable from the cable modem into the router. The TR has a built-in wireless network adapter in it. Just flip that switch on the lower edge on the left to turn it on. It’s recommended you set some of the security options on the router and on the TR to prevent people from getting on your network. If you have a newer TR, it will most likely support 802.11g (faster) but all TRs will support 802.11b. It’s recommended you go for a router that supports G anyway in case you ever trade up. Linksys and Netgear are both well-respected brands.

Will this do.. ?I also have a seperate modem for a different connection in one of the rooms which uses USB instead of RJ 45 to connect so it needs to have a USB interface, can you recommend something that has both a interface for USB and RJ45.

Edit: whats the difference between cable/dsl routers and adsl/broadband modem routers .. ?

That router will work, but I’ve had lots of problems with that model, but that may have just been a screwy unit. Others on the forum have reported that the Linksys WRT54G worked well for them. What kind of modem is the USB modem? A cable modem or a dial-up. These kinds of routers won’t route dial-up modems.

Its a cable modem, and it connects to my pc through the USB port. So its only natural that the router should have a USB interface in order so that modem can connect through that router.

I just found out that the USB cable modem has one end connected to the phone line , does that make it a dial up cable modem? Anyway this is the cable modem that i use .. SpeedTouch USB ADSL Modem at

First off, that’s a DSL modem, not a cable modem. DSL is a phone-based technology, but not dial-up. Honestly, I’d get a new modem with an ethernet port…

You have one option i think. You can ofcourse buy a ADSL cable modem cum wireless router and connect the RJ 11 wire to this ADSL modem and the wireless router will broadcast your bytes around the precinct.

You can choose several ones.

Above is the link to ebuyer UK and the Manufacturer is netgear. Its an expensive option but really its all you’ll ever need ( Unless your looking at 802.11g2 ones which are still under consideration, i think )
