Dear X505 owners,
after reading a lot of reviews and ofcourse tifosiv122’s review  i decided to buy the X505/SP and say goodbye to my compaq lap. x505 should arrive somewhere next week.
I was wondering if owner’s of the X505 have thought about theft of your precious X505?
Is it possible to use somekinda lock, like the ones from kensington?
greetz,
Congrats! I am sure you will love your new x505. To answer your question (and I doubled checked just now) there is no place to hook up a Kensington lock. The good thing is the Kensington lock is a waste of time anyway as they discovered last year that any pen can open it up in under a minute.
I am just super careful with it…people get up from class during break and leave their notebooks on the desk…I just unplug mine and carry it…it’s light enough.
Remove the front and back covers of a standard spiral bound notebook, and attach them with double sided tape to your X505. Voila, instant camouflage.

[quote author=“Rahul”]Isn’t it thicker at the hinge? They probably could have had one over there
And as far as the lock being unreliable goes, would that be the case for all laptop locks or just that one kensington model?
IIRC, I had read someplace that they will replace all stolen laptops which were secured properly with their lock.
It is thicker at the hinge but its still very thin. On one side you have the PC Card + Audio port. The other has the 2 USB + 1 Dongle for ethernet. None of these ports fit any lower because it’s too thin so the thicker part wouldnt work unless you would loose a port. You can’t use the back because it’s the battery + hinge. The only option is the really thin part, and as I said I would think you could just snap it off, the casing isn’t very strong.
As for the replacement, I limited to $1,500 per notebook, $10,000 per year per person (if you own several notebooks all stolen). $1,500 would cover about half the MSRP of an x505.
Erik
EDIT: One other thing…since its so thin, i think even at the thickest part, if they made the hole for the lock, the lock would be so thick that the notebook might not be able to be set down without the lock pushing the notebook up. (I hope that makes sense).

(I hope that makes sense).
Erik
sure does…you just made me even more desperate to look at the X505 in person :(
I have a fellows lock (I never got to use it), i’ll take a pic tomorrow…I was right, it’s way too thick to use on the notebook unless the power button was the hole.
[quote author=“Sony Vaio”][quote author=“tifosiv122”]Yeah I’ll post one today…I passed out last night, I slept from 6pm to today 8am! WooHoo I needed it.
I just bought a truck yesterday and I need to take it to get serviced this morning, when I get back I will take a pic and post it.
Erik
what kind of truck? thought u dont fancy a truck at all ...
I didn’t but the storm we got last weekend changed my mind. I called the Jag dealer and told him if he could pick me up I would buy the car. He told me it was too much snow he couldn’t get it off the lot. I knew I needed a truck at that point. I still hate it, but I really have no choice. Anyway, the service place took longer then expected and I had to do other things so the pic will need to wait till tonight. Good thing is that I got my U today (thanks iCube) and I will take pictures of that so it’s a two for one deal.
Erik,
You got U? At first I thought U digital camera, and I looked at your profile and saw U750P??? Maybe start a new thread and enlighten us on your decision to get it…would love to see your point of view and pics…
