Back to the original topic, you can use the same key for XP as well and install on several machines if you have the licenses to as well…
But you can get caught doing this with XP unlike before right?
If you activate it without cracking it, technically.
Erik
And… umm purely hypothetically as in all of these questions… how would one go about cracking it… downloaded freeware or actual coding or burning a “copy” of a WinXP cd…

There is a patch you can execute to trick the activation into thinking it’s been activated. I think the first version was released while XP was still in beta…so much for MS’s copy protection

As I heard on a pro-Linux site “Microsoft worked for a year to produce a new XP that hackers exploited with 10 extra minutes of their time.” (context: SP2 release)
I have a legal copy  of xp on my desktop and laptop ...I install XP on another machine using my desktop’s/laptop’s serial # and try to activate it…it will fail obviously (since they were 1 machine licenses). However, now say I get a crack and activate XP on this machine and try to get SP2…will the update site allow me or tell me it’s an illegal serial #...blah blah ?
My guess is it would allow me since the serial # would not be black listed, but just wondering still…

MS stated a while back that they were allowing even blacklisted serials to obtain SP2 just because they wanted to stop the spread of virus and worm infections. I believe you need to re-patch after SP2, though I am not sure.

They reneged on that. It’s the same list of blocked serials that SP1 had (10 IIRC).

I got the Windows 2000 cd but… of course, I didnt notice the fine print… It works only with Dell computers… so I’m happy as can be and biting my nails hoping that I can reflash the BIOS with a Dell Bios… Any recommendations on a quick AND simple way to do this.
Actually I just got it working but that was a great find… Too bad they wnt just tell you how to reverse engineer… it would be such a great talent on a job application
at 1 time I tried reverse engineering with stuff like Softice and W32DASM but it was a bit too much for me. But, I do remember getting buy now softwares off egghead.com and managing to unlock them with softice.
[quote author=“Rahul”]so how did u get it to work ?

Had another Windows 2000 CD laying around with no product key and decided to try the product key that came with the “Dell only” cd installer. Wasnt sure if it would accept it but it did and now I’ve got 2k up & running on a couple of desktops.
Actually, you can take the pre-loaded WindowsXP on your latptop and “slipstream” a copy of it and burn it to bootable CD and re-install it onto your computer. As long as it’s a Sony and the same model, or close to the model as you are using, it should work. You can even “slipstream” SP2 into the WinXP installation CD and it will install it with windows. You will need the free program called “Autostreamer.” to do this. Anyway, it can be done with Windows2000 too. Just read this to the end and you’ll see: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=188337&st=0
