Well I was doing my runs to engadget and the article about the sonoma intel thing caught my eye. I herd about it before but I wanted to spread the news and start dreaming about the future sub notebooks to have this in it.

We all can dream about a sony sub notebook these specs for now!

mabey a video card! so we can rock out the mobile gameing
powerprofiles that work more with the hardware to push amazeing battery life when needed

Well, Sony has rolled out the new chipsets in their larger notebooks already. Most of the announcements will come out today since the NDA has expired and Intel is “officially selling” them now.

You will see the new stuff eventually trickle down into the ultramobile sector. Unfortunately, big notebooks still sell better than smaller ones and they get the better parts first. Once Intel ramps up production and gets rid of all of the older chipsets in the channel then you’ll see more designs.

My only fear is that discrete graphics still won’t make it into the <= 3lb. ultraportable market because companies will justify that Intel’s new GMA900 (lobotomized DX9) graphics is good enough. It certainly is better than Intel Un-Extreme Graphics 2 but it’s already behind the curve compared to what’s available.

I think the new processer that ultraportables would use (the 1.2 Ghz ULV) only supports the 400Mhz FSB. The Intel roadmaps don’t show a 533FSB ULV part until Fall 2005.

Yeah, but there will still be overall performance increases thanks to more accelerated stuff in the supporting chipsets. I think you’re more likely to see a minor speed bump in the 400Mhz ULV chips before you see an FSB increase. FWIW, the systems that are using the ULV chips are pretty fast as it is (for that form factor).

Of course, we’ll see if AMD’s Turion is actually any good as that may help Intel accelerated their roadmaps a bit. My only concern is that Turion may not venture into ULV type territory and simply stick with the more mainstream LV designs.

Personally, I don’t mind that the ULV stuff is concentrating on power consumption first and foremost. That’s what I want out of my TR, not a gaming machine with a huge screen that lasts and hour and a half on battery…

On a much geekier note, have any other Tolkein fans noticed the eerie similarity between the new AMD chip’s name and major people and places in the Silmarillion?

Exactly. If I wanted to play games i’d use a console or a desktop…if I had to have a notebook that played games it wouldn’t be anything that Sony offered anyway…and my back would hurt from carrying it.
