I love the way it recharges when you plug it into USB… but i think the Shuffle in and of itself is stupid when you dont even have control over which songs play and no LCD…

You have control over what songs are played…you don’t need to shuffle…it can play in order and you can skip and go back just like any other Mp3 player. What Apple is basically saying is that on a small mp3 player, 1GB or less you don’t really need to search through songs…you just play them.
A tiny LCD doesn’t do too much anyway, it’s sort of annoying looking through directories on a one-two line LCD…at least thats apple’s contention.
[quote author=“tmkt”]you can create a playlist for it..
and the no lcd is the only way apple could keep the cost down…
Not a bad price…
I doubt that… a small 1-2 line LCD (which i woould consider more helpful than not) would not be too expensive for them… if anything it was to keep the battery life up.

I’ve had several flash Mp3 players and I can honestly say I never really looked at the LCD…they were usually terrible in contrast and most had no backlight. You hear the song almost as quick as you can read it off the screen.
And your right, it does help on battery life, but an LCD does add to the cost as well.
I have a bang and olufsen Beosound 2 which has no lcd screen and I have never found it to be a problem, I just scroll through the songs. Its very intuitive.

Honestly, most of the flash based Mp3 player’s i’ve had have been terrible…mainly due to when they were released. I was an early adopter of the technology and a lot of the products were overpriced and rushed to market. I haven’t owned a flash player for over 1 1/2 years so I am not current on any of the newer ones. You can save yourself some money by looking for a player without internal memory, one that uses some standard memory such as SD or CF.
I heard that the Creative Nomad MuVo Slim is a very solid player with good features. I think it retails for $100, so maybe on ebay you can get it lower.
This is probably a year and half ago so take it with a grain of salt. I bought the MuVO (128MB) edition when it first came out because i liked the fact that you could plug the thing directly into your machine.
My experience was awful. I was never actually able to get the thing to work and ended up taking it back to Best Buy. The interface looked like someone wrote it in VB in their basement and the drivers just didn’t work at all. I wasted an entire Saturday to try and install it.
By the by, has anyone bought a newer IPOD (I don’t mean the MINI or the new one). I bought my IPOD (20GB) version a year and a half ago and, while i thought it was a good technology….had a horrible experience with the battery. It would lose its charge regularly, even when i wasn’t using it. It’s “standby” time was worst than my phone! I was wondering if the newer generations have better battery performance.
Also, has anybody ever sent theirs in for repair? What was your experience? I’m a bit leary of spending a hundred bucks to get the same thing i got when it first came out of the box.

Lam.
Their older Mp3 players did have some issues, but these are the 5th and 6th generation…they know how to make one now.
As far as the iPod goes…mine does the same thing. I don’t get a week of battery even if I don’t use it. Did you set an alarm? Sometimes people set alarms thinking its only for one time, but it’s forever until you shut it…then their ipods turn on in the middle of the day and play for hours before they realize it.
