“In addition to the revolutionary PSP hardware, the PSP Value Pack contains an unprecedented added-value package of accessories and entertainment content, including 32 MB Memory Stick Duo(TM), headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case and cleaning cloth, movie/music/game video sampler UMD disc including multiple non-interactive game demos, and for the first one million PSP Value Packs shipped, a special UMD video release of the feature film Spider-Man(TM) 2 from Sony Pictures Entertainment.”

“Sony Computer Entertainment will manufacture one million units for sale in the North American market by the close of its fiscal year ending March 31. This figure is part of the company’s total three-million-unit worldwide PSP system shipment estimate within the same time period. “
I completely see this sitting on the shelves…but maybe I will be wrong.

Erik
The PS2 launched at $300 and it flew off the shelves. Even more significant is that quite a few were sold on eBay during launch at much higher prices, indicating a much higher demand value.
Personally I think even at $250 it will easily sell out.
Yeah, you’re definitely going to want the value pack since it comes with all the stuff you would buy for it anyways. I think it is priced a little high for those looking simply for a portable gaming device; however, it’s the software that will make the difference. Sony needs to make sure it has good and unique titles (and not simply ports) available. That will probably be one of the key factors. It generally is for any platform.
Also, they need to start advertising the types of accessories they’re going to add on (i.e. the GPS unit) as that will also help them justify the cost of the unit.
Oh well, we’ll see what happens. I’ll likely get one just because. In the meantime, my DS is keeping me happy and growing on me. The Pictochat feature is hilarious and extremely well designed.

Hmm… I dunno about that. The strap and case look kind of shoddy, and the memory card capacity of 32mb is kind of anemic. Personally i’d rather be able to get the base unit alone.

Better not to make any promises rather than to announce a slew of vaporware, imho.
[quote author=“hshau”]I see the PSP losing out to the DS in the younger players region….
I doubt that many parents would buy a $250 portable Gameboy-like thing for a smaller child…
I still think it will sell well; I think people have still been pre-ordering from EB World despite the $399 price tag
You’d also be suprised at how many adults are buying DS. Many of my friends have bought one because they simply want something they can grab and play. Nintendo definitely is gearing their product for that type of use.
I added a gallery of my psp on my website if you want to see some fresh pictures  (will update it pretty soon)
By the way, i don’t agree with gr00vy0ne about the value pack, except the case (which is not very useful and not as safety for the screen as it might look), the memory stick duo is way too small, the headphones are too basic and the remote looks pretty cheap. I bought a 512 ms pro duo with my psp and another unofficial case. Now everything from the value pack stays in its original box ...

Well, don’t you want the remote anyways? Some people may want to use the PSP as an MP3 player. So, regardless if it’s cheap or not…you still need it. There’s no 3rd party remotes the last time i checked.

You can buy a separate (official) pack with the headphones & remote for less than $25…
Anyway, i’m not complaining, i just wanted to say that i didn’t think too much when i ordered a value pack and, in my case, a simple pack would have been enough
I went into EB Games today to place some Pre-Orders on PSP games…the first question he asked me is if I know how much the PSP will retail for…I said I did. He asked if I still wanted to keep my pre-order, I said I did. He informed me that I am now #1. The 2 other customer pre-orders canceled as well as the people that worked in the store (apparently they do not get a discount on consoles). Anyway, I placed my Pre-order for Ridge Racer, Need For Speed, and MVP Baseball.
On another note, he said the chain has been getting so many DS trade-ins that the new trade-in price is $90…down significantly. Apparently people are complaining of the lack of DS specific games.
Last but not least they have more then a fair share of PS2 Slim…having sold only a handfull since release.
anyone know where you can pre-order besides EB games?
i think that the $249 starting pricing point is not too bad. there will be plenty of people (like myself) which will snatch the PSP “value pack”.
i think a PSP-unit only (standard pack) will go for $199 before Christmas.
i think there are way more than 1 million people who will try to get the PSP during the last week of march. the “value pack” idea will extract an extra $50 from consumers who have to get it now. multiply $50 by 1 mil and we get an extra $50 million bucks in revenue.
anyone else actually held both consoles in their hand?
the psp will dominate - better looks (the psp is sleek and sexy with a huge 16:9 display, the ds looks like an 80’s dual screen gameandwatch) better gfx (ps2 style as opposed to n64 style) better music (from disc istead of limited by cartridge) The only thing thats vauguely new about the ds is the touch sensivte second screen - which is likely to be underused on ports of popular games.
