mmm… the default (non-carrier-specific) firmware definitely does NOT support voice calls.

a) what is the firware/software version of the aircard?
b) do you have a “.bin” file on your machine as a result of the aircard installation?

I have the latest T-Mobile drivers installed. When I first inserted my card, the software immediately recognized it had an older firmwire (from sometime in 2002) and offered to update it to a newer version (5/16/2003). I figured I should do it since I had heard that the card had issues.

I didn’t realize the voice call support didn’t work before since it worked for me the first time I tried it.

So, looking at my card’s properties it shows the following:

Software: 3.1.0.12
Firmware: R3_1_17ACAP
Firmware Build Date: 5/16/2003
Boot Loader: R1_0_0acbt
Hardware: 1.3
NDIS Driver: R1_1_3_ac_gprs

Yes, I do have a .BIN file as a result of the installation. It’s ac710d.bin dated 5.16.2003.

I had the Sprint CF 2032 card for over a year.  Its Compact Flash and has PC card adapter as well.  Used it in both my IPAQ and with my SR27K and TR1.  ISDN speeds and good coverage here in the southeast, at least where ever I needed to go.  Worked as a phone but really impractical for that use.

Got a Treo 600 last month, retired the card a coupe of days ago.  It works as a modem as well via sync cable.

I picked up the AirCard 750on ebay for about $110.  I updated the software, etc.  I got the T-Mobile plan of $19.99 for unlimited internet access and if you want to make calls thru the laptop its something like .35 cents a minute.  Well, I don’t plan on using it for the phone because I think thats a hefty price to pay per minute.  My main reason for getting it was for the internet access.  As I’ve used it for the internet, its very slow.  I’ve turned off the image display and that helped a bit, but its still really slow.  I’ve check out some of the other companies and it turns out that Verizon definitely has the fastest wireless service.  Its at the speed of cable(i think).  THe only problem is its $80 a month.  But, I guess you get what you pay for.

Yeah, the AirCard definitely isn’t the fastest thing in the world…even though you’re technically getting around a 56k connection, the latency times are somewhat awful. It’s definitely ok for single tasking internet stuff…like checking e-mail or viewing one web page at a time. If you try to do more than that they you’ll be frustrated.

I don’t really know much about it, but isn’t there something that they use on PDAs with the internet that provides just the content and not all the graphics?  I’m thinking its something like WAP.  I could be wrong.  But my question is, can you set the laptop for that or is it just too much trimming back to get a little speed and very little to look at?

Two things: 1xRTT (Verizon’s service) isn’t all that much faster than GPRS. It’s nowhere near cable speeds. Also, you can turn off pictures in IE in the Internet Options dialog.

I have used this setup since my SRX77 - uber-cool, connectivity just about everywhere. Speeds are a lot better than my t68i & GPRS. You can also use the Venturi Wireless accelerator, which compresses graphics etc to improve speed.

I have it on my T2AP1 right now, the only problem is the antenna - it detaches and I have lost it once. $50.

if you dont have a phone plan with tmobile then the phone calls costs .20/min with the aircard. 

i pay 29.99 for the aircard service and 19.99 for star bucks service
