Sorry..I am a newbie for Sony vaio TR..
I am just wondering what is the difference between TR2A, TR2AP1, TR2AP3 and TR3?
I have checked the spec of the different models of TR2, but I dont really see any difference ...besides xp pro and xp home.

I am looking to buy one within the $2000 range… :D

You’re basically seeing the difference. Any of the models that has P in it means that it comes with Windows XP Professional.

Any number after the P reflects extra features whether it be extra memory installed as standard or a different wireless option (in the case of the TR2AP3).

Right now, the TR3 models are not officially announced so we’ll have to see what’s available. You can probably expect one entry level model with XP home installed and two XP Pro models (on of which will have the DVD burner). I suspect all of the TR3 models will support Intel’s latest 802.11g wireless card or possibly Intel’s 802.11a/b/g card…though that’s less likely.

but i heard..tr3 is gonna have the same processor as tr2?

tr2 only supports 802.11b right?

tr2a and tr2ap1 supports 802.11b and tr2ap3 supports 802.11g

is there a huge difference between b and g in terms of browsing and stuff?

No. Even if you’re on cable, you won’t feel a difference. Most cable modems won’t go above 2 or 3mbps. 802.11b caps out well above that. If you do a lot of file transfers, it might be worth it, but surfing and email will be just fine with b.

Just to add on to Drachen’s post…by file transfers he means within a network and not downloading stuff from the internet.

..and to ask another question…

when this TR3P will hit the market, for the rest of us that we are stuck with the combo CDR, DVD reader will there be an option to upgrade to the DVD burner drive?

As a spare part of course and if it whould be easy for us to install it..

You won’t find Sony selling the DVD-RW internal drive as an upgrade. It’s not really supposed to be a user upgradable part. Doesn’t mean someone won’t find a way of doing it but it’s not as easy as sliding it out of a modular bay and popping in a new one.

In this forum there is a good post on how to disasseble the model, maybe from a third party in the future a DVD-R will come for internal use and the specs that are appropriate for our models.

A 30 second visit to sonystyle.com says that the only difference between the TR2A and TR2AP1 is Windows XP Professional on the TR2AP1. So you’ve got it exactly right.
