[quote author=“Chris687”]I have a question for you computer geeks out there….
I have a 17” wide that I play games at 1280x720 native res.
I was wondering if I buy a 20” wide and play in the 1600x800 native resolution will I loose FPS?...
And how many…I have a ati x800….and in my signature is my specs on my pc…
Thanks…
It depends on the monitor and what resolution you run the game at. With LCDs, it’s ideal if you run at the native pixel dimensions. Of course, if the game is running to slow, you can always lower it to a compatible aspect ratio resolution and force your LCD to interpolate.
1280x720 and 1280x768 are common for 10-23” widescreens.
1600x1024, 1680x1050, and 1920x1200 are common for 17-30” widescreens.
Another factor is the game engine itself. Some game engines actually start to run more efficiently at higher resolutions. You do “lose” FPS but as long as it’s over 60 fps, you should care. Let’s say you’re running 1280x720 and getting 100 fps. Then let’s say you jump up to 1600x1024 but are only getting 60 fps. In most cases you won’t be able to tell the difference at all. Even 30-60 fps is fine. If you drop below 30 fps then you’ll notice the difference. So, you’ll have to take it on a case by case basis as certain cards run better on certain graphics engines.
