I just received my Sony VRD-VC10 DVD Recorder which is a curious device that had me interested when it was announced a few months ago. The reason why this device is neat is that it acts as a standalone unit. You can connect composite or s-video + LR audio inputs directly to the device and record video. So, you can connect your VCR, video cameras, etc. and record without the need for a computer.

You can also connect the device to your computer via the USB 2.0 port and it acts like a USB optical drive. Interestingly enough, it shows up as a DRU-710A drive. I’m in the process of burning my first DVD from a VHS source so we’ll see how it goes. Interestingly enough, you can only use DVD+R/RW discs in direct burn mode. Anyways, it’s brainlessly easy to use and hopefully the quality will good. A full review forthcoming after some more real world usage. I’m sure Erik will have one too.  :wink:

just wondered, how much is it.. and is it be able to read cd/r/rw as well(as an optical usb2 drive)?

I need a DVD recorder since my TR3A doesn’t have one.
Besides, I love those cool external devices cause, if they are good, they will last more than one computer…

Yeah I think mine shipped yesterday…the only problem is I am on my way home soon…if It doesn’t show up in the next few days it will sit in MI until after the New Year :cry:

As for it showing up as a DRU-710A, it makes sense, that’s whats inside. It’s similar to the DRX-710UL.

I am interested to see if we have different views on the product.

Well, the first trial run is done and it’s pretty good. I digitized an old Eddie Murphy Delirious VHS tape and used Standard Quality (2hr mode) instead of HQ (1hr mode) because it’s a little over 1 hour. It’s pretty good quality though and works fine in my DVD player.

I used the S-video connection for a cleaner signal. I’m going to try a few more trials (with HQ and SQ compared) to see how it works. It also builds a generic menu for you as well on the disc just in case you put on multiple videos on one disc.
