I got tired of the fan noise from my laptop cooler so I thought I would try this heat pipe cooler.  No fans, no power needed, etc.

The one I tried was the Nexus TDD-3000.  It seems to have little or no effect on the temperature of my TR3A.  The HD temp got up to 55/131 degrees which is pretty much what it gets to just sitting on my desk.

My fan cooler on the other hand gets the HD temp down to 46/115 degrees and the keyboard and palm rests feel MUCH cooler. 

I am trying the heat pipe cooler on my wife’s much larger laptop to see if it works better there but it was a waste of $29 for my TR.

It’s too bad, it seemed like a good idea but it just doesn’t work.

Well the most common type of heat pipe is a vacuum with a small amount of some liquid inside.  Liquids boil at lower temperatures in a vacuum so ...

  heat from laptop (or cpu) heats up liquid in pipe,
  liquid vaporizes and travels to the top of the heat pipe, 
  heatsinks or fans cool the vapor at the top of the heat pipe and
  the vapor condenses back to a liquid,
  gravity pulls liquid back to bottom of heat pipe.

If I had to guess I would say your laptop was not getting hot enough to vaporize the liquid in the pipe.  I’ve only seen heat pipes used to cool REALLY hot electronics ... like my Shuttle PC’s CPU.

Yup, that’s the one.  It did not seem to work on my TR3A but seems to be having a greater impact on my wifes much larger HP6000 Omnibook.  Her palms aren’t sweating any more on the keyboard.

It could be that I just wasn’t generating enough heat and hers is.

So it’s not a complete bust but before you buy one make sure you can return it.  I will probably keep this one (it was $29) since it seems to work on the wife’s laptop.

This product must be a joke…well, it may work on full blown desktop replacement systems but most likely wont’ make any difference on thing and lights that generate minimal amounts of heat to begin with.

That’s what I discovered.  I am still trying to find a quiet way to keep my TR cool, the cheap ass cooler I found makes a lot of noise but does do a great job of knocking 10 degrees off my hard drive temp which probably means a decent drop on other temps too.
