Hey guys my housemate is looking to buy a 20Gb MP3 player so I thought I’d get your opinions on what’s good at the moment.
Or if you have any sites which do good reviews etc it’d be muchos appreciated

Just because it’s the icon doesn’t mean it’s the best.  I’m not saying it isn’t as I know nothing about them, but I know the people on this forum know their stuff and I respect their opinions 8)

Depends what you want out of a player. If you want to buy music files from iTMS, the iPod is the ony way to go. If you want any other music store, like OD2, Napster or whatever, you’ll need to look to iRiver, Creative or Rio would be a better choice. Do you care about optical in/out, dictation abilities, on-the-fly playlists, accessories or size? Do you have a price limit?

Ipod does on-the-fly playlists now as well.

It is not necessary to use iTunes for the iPod.  I ripped all my music in MP3 which works fine on the iPod.  I actually burn/rerip the AAC files I get from iTunes so they will play on my Audtiontron which won’t handle AAC.

I prefer to have my entire collection in one, more acceptable format so I won’t have to rerip it over and over if I change players.

I’m a novice at MP3 players, so my needs are pretty simple. Based largely on a review that Drachen did back in February on iRiver’s iHP-140 (40GB), I took the plunge and bought the smaller 20GB version (iHP-120). It took me a while to figure out the menu system, but the quality of the player and the sound are superb.

They’ve changed the model to H120 since I bought mine a few months ago and they’ve added some other models.

Again, my needs are simple. But as I begin to enjoy this unit more and more it seems like the iRiver has ample versatility to satisfy just about any needs.

I ordered a dell mp3 player and its backstock until Jan.  I can’t wait to see how it compares to the ipod…

I hope they impoved the OS from their original one…mine froze all the time…it was a simple restart, but after a while, it got annoying.

I doubt he’ll be buying tunes online.  He buys cds and rips them himself.  He used to have a creative zen 20gig but that broke.  He hated the creative sync program so he doesn’t fancy one of those again.
As for ins/outs as long as it’s got USB or Firewire to get the stuff on and a plug for his headphones he’ll be happy!
He tends to just listen to albums rather than make his own playlists so thats easy.
Accessories I’m not sure about, but I should think a cover would suffice.
I used to think the Zen was pretty big so around that or smaller would do!
