No big secret, I didn’t think anyone would care. 8)
I work on a contract for the FDIC (Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation), writing COBOL for CICS and DB2 to handle some accounting applications they need. Our particular application is used to track money and transactions related to failed banks.
I have been on this project since 1991 which is a rarity in the programming field I think. I started as a temp consultant and now I am the guy in charge. I handle everything from database design to coding, testing and change management as well as the on-call support for the application.
It’s a pretty small staff now, my wife and I are the only two people programming. When the project started there were 10-12 programmers and all sorts of people for support and training, about 45 in all. It’s been trimmed back quite a bit over the years.
We get to work at home. I do sort of miss “going to work” and cabin fever does set in occasionally but most of the time it’s pretty nice. No fighting traffic, a lot less wear on the car, less gas usage and no parking.
As long as they keep paying me the “big bucks  ” to be here I will hang around. Unfortunately there is no telling how long it will last as it has become a year-to-year sort of thing but then I feel like most programming jobs are like that anyway.
