Has anyone tried benchmarking it with it plugged in but with the battery removed?

yeah , on my orioginal S1, the performance shot up again on removal of the battery (whilst playing), but I must repeat, this new machine is fine.

And, the fan makes NO buzzing noise, only the whoosh of air - much much better.

Screen is still poo compared to the a series, though…

Damn damn damn - just been playing MOH Pacific Assault on battery - 45-50 frames per second.

Plugged in the AC adaptor.

Dropped to 15-17 fps.

Shit.

Battery is at 37%. As soon as I remove the AC the fps reverts to normal.
And I thought this third machine had solved all my initial problems.

Can I know what is your ‘latest’ machine model number which still has the problem? Is it the S1XP?

I have just ordered a S2VP from SonyStyle (2GHz/1GB RAM/9700 64MB/80HDD/DVD+-RW) machine, which is the latest UK S-series model. So, as soon as I have got my machine sometime this week, I can run a test on it and might be able to report back to you whether this latest model does suffer the same problem you are facing or not. Then if this model is ok, hopefully you can exchange it with your old one then!  :D Fingers crossed!

It’s an S1XP.

Weird stuff happened last night. As I mentioned the ‘old trick’ was back where the frame rate would halve suddenly when recharging - but then it suddenly shot up, then down, then up etc. for a while.

Both machines I had previously exhibited the drop in fps immediately - I even tested the stock machine in PC World a few months ago, which also slowed down upon recharge, so I counted myself lucky when my third S1XP warked flawlessly.

I’d be really intrigued to discover whether the S2 series exhibits this behaviour also - thanks for looking into it Patrick. PC World mentioned that they would only exhange it again if it was identified as a problem by Sony. And we all know how much chance there is of that happening….
