i have setup the home office netowork through ms.  for some reason with the new tr it gets hung up trying to access the networked desktop computer (music, files whatever)  my dell laptop sitting right next to it never has that problem.  what could be hanging up the tr when connecting to the desktop computer?  it keeps happening over and over.

i think i got it!  i added the ip for the tr on the desktop side of zone alarm.  and now it seems to be working great!  heeeeeey i am not so dumb after all.  weeeeeeeeeeeee (ah maybe i am)

i think i am getting ahead of myself!  there is 100% an issue with the tr network connection to my desktop?

That’s strange indeed since you shouldn’t have any issues. I’ll assume all of the system are using DHCP?

Also, are all of the permissions setup correctly? If you’re using Simple File Sharing in Windows XP then you should be able to at least access the basic Shared Files folders on the systems. Know that Simple File Sharing can cause issues if you’re trying to map to local drives (like C$ kind of shares).

There shouldn’t be B/G issues…I’m using Sony’s wireless G card on my TR1 and can access stuff on wired and B networks fine.

I assume everything on your network is in the same workgroup? It sometimes helps that you have the same username/password on all of the systems for seamless movement between systems. Otherwise you might have to remember to manually tell the network share to use different credentials.

i am not sure what you mean about the DHCP stuff?  how do i check that. 

i am not sure if all the permissions are setup correctly?  i know that i do not have this problem with my other laptop.  so i am at a loss.  i dont know how to get this to work.  it seems to be dropping the connection with the netowked desktop or having trouble establishing a connection. 

i did map drives from the desktop and again i never have a problem on the other laptop.  what can i do to fix this???  could it be a ZA issue?  or the norton software that cam with the computer?

DHCP just refers to the the addresses of the computer. DHCP means they are automatically getting an address from your router and that you’re not manually giving them an address.

You can try temporarily disabling ZoneAlarm completely to see if that solves the problem.

Also, you can go to all three computers and go to network connections and run the home networking wizard on all of them and make sure they all have the same settings. Also a quick reboot after this wouldn’t hurt as well. After that, see if the problem still exists.

i am so confused….sh_t!  i checked the router and the lan ip setting are set to use DHCP.  i also added the desktop and router to ZA trusted zones but that didnt do anything.  i also rebooted didnt help, i also turned off ZA and that didn help. 

when i try to access the network it gets hung up and then when i try to x out of the network connection i all the info disapears on the tr desktop except the wallpaper. 

maybe i should ask za not to start on start up and then reboot and see if i have the problem then?

I’m sorry you’re having difficulties with the networking. I’m almost 100% sure that it’s not a B/G thing. One way to test this theory is to plug your TR2 into your router/hub with an ethernet cable and see if your network connections. If it works then it’s a wireless issue. If it still doesn’t work then it’s some other issue.

I’m suspecting it’s something else and it’s probably due to permissions problems.

NTFS/FAT shouldn’t be too big of a problem. As long as your logon credentials are the same everything should work. Ok. What OS is your desktop and dell laptop running? I know your TR2AP is XP Pro. So what are the others? Also are the username/passwords similar on the machines? Let me know what these are and hopefully we can get you connected. Feel free to IM me if you want quicker help.

(xp pro) with built in b/g card (firewall nothing at the moment)

dell 4150 laptop
(xp home) (b card ma401 netgear) (firewall sygate free)

i have had a network setup for 1.5 years so far between the dell and the desktop and all works fine.  all computers have the same workgroup name and yes they all have the same user name and password.

Definitely try the wired connection first so we can rule out the wireless as the problem.

Also, can the VAIO see the Dell?

When the Dell accesses the Desktop system, is it just the basic “Shared Folder” that you are seeing? Do all of the systems have “Simple File Sharing” enabled?

Sorry for all of the questions….just trying to get a better picture of what’s going on with the systems.  :D

2) yes the vaio can see the dell and i actually played about 1 hours worth of music from the dell, it played it on the vaio fine.  i did have a problem with sygate not letting me into the dell so i turned off sygate.  i need to put in the ip of the vaio to let it work (i will do that later as well)

3) the dell acccess the mapped C and D drives in the desktop no problems at all.  i fuly sharing those drives on the desktop computer. 

4) Do all of the systems have “Simple File Sharing” enabled?

ok so i hooked it up by way of a wired connection.  guess what…. it still has some problems. 

i have a question:  could one file or a set of files jam up a network connection?  because it seemed everytime i rolled the mouse over a certain folder it would stall.  so i deleted that folder on the networked drive and now its working better.  still not 100% perfect but better.  the other problem is sometimes i cant even get into the drive at all. 

i also disconnected the mapped drive and reinstalled and it seems to be working better. 

could my other laptop signal be interfering with this connection? 

should i format the drive that givng me a problem?

Strange problems. Sounds like you’ve got some disk corruption from the description of the folder problem. I’d try going to Start -> Run -> “chkdsk /f” and hit Enter. Hit ‘Y’ and reboot. Let it check the disk as it boots. If the disk checker DOES find problems, you should entertain the idea that you’ve got a bad hard disk. Has the computer frozen on you at odd times or given you bluescreen errors?

do you want me to check the vaio disk or the desktop drive?  because i only have a problem accessing the networked drives from the vaio not my dell laptop. 

now i have even more problems but i thinks it on the router side and on the vaio miniwifi card.  i tried to access a big audio file from the desktop on the vaio and it totally blew all my network connections.  from the vaio i couldnt connect to the desktop anymore.  i really think there is something wrong with this vaio but i am not sure.  because i also now am getting new errors on all computers talking about an ip conflict.  i have never seen that before ever.  i also got an errror message talking about “windows delayed write failed”  data has been lost this errror maybe due to computer hardware failure WTF?

Try the TR. That’s the machine you deleted the screwy folder on, right?

An IP address clash is a pretty common occurance when you have DHCP (automatic IPs) and manually assigned IP addresses running together. The error is basically that two computers have the same IP address, which is illegal. Next time, try to assign the manual IP starting at 254 and go down (eg. 192.168.1.254). You should adjust the top of the DHCP range down too, but that should prevent clashes should you need to set an IP manually.

A delayed write error means that Windows stored some info in memory to put on the disk, waited until the disk said it was ready and tried to write, but wasn’t able to for one reason or another. This could be a local disk or a disk on a network. If you got this trying to copy a file to the TR, it indicates a problem with the hard disk. If it was from the TR, it’s just a symptom of your networking problems.

i am a know nothing idiot when it comes to networking etc….  but i called netgear again and i finally got a good person on the horn and they set me on the right course which was exactly what you just wrote. 

what i did was set the vaio to use a certain ip address 192.168.0.10 and i set my desktop to use .20 and my other laptop to use .15 and now is all working well. 

i really think that made the difference.  but i am not sure?  i am nervous but i think that was the ticket!!  i hope it doesnt fail!
