[quote author=“Rahul”]MegaManXcalibur, thanks for the suggestions…the creating the username thing is a very good advice, however I wont use it since I do a lot of downloading…would it be possible to allow the restricted user access to other drives so I can save my data there (and may be other folders on c drive?)...I dont think the spyware would install itself on other drives
Actually it’s easy to change permissions on Windows XP to give a restricted user access rights to specific areas (i.e. a second drive or just certain folders). First and foremost you must be in an administrator account.
If your running Windows XP Pro just to go “My Computer”. From there select the “Tools” menu and then click “Folder Options…”
Now click the “View” tab and uncheck “Simple File Sharing (Recommended)” (just a note, just because it’s recommened doesn’t mean it’s good, it’s just a way of simplifying things for regular Joe Users).
Now click the “Apply” button and then the “OK” button.
Now when you right click on a folder or drive and go to “Properties” you’ll have a new security tab that will allow you to give specific permissions to specific users or groups (in the case of a folder you download files to you would want to give your user account “Full Control” which is done by selecting your user name from the listed users box and then checking “Fill Control”).
If your running Windows XP Home you’ll have to reboot into safe mode. To do these things but the steps are the same (although I’m not sure if you have to disable simple file sharing if you’re doing this in safe mode).
This is also a good way to give permissions for users to program folders that were made for Windows 98 or something likd that and requires write permissions to it’s folder.
