Hi,

I have a desktop with the following config:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
ASUS A8V Deluxe
Radeon X800 XT
1 10000 rpm SATA drive from WD
2 x 80 gb IDE drives
1 gb PC3200 RAM from crucial
500w power supply

Would my computer perform faster if I got windows xp 64 bit edition?...especially the games like FS2004?

Unless FS2004 itself is 64-bit aware (which i know isn’t) then you won’t get any sort of performance increase. Even simply going to XP64 won’t give you any increase at all. In fact, you run the risk of programs running slower since most companies are still focusing all of their attention to 32-bit Windows and their drivers (especially video ones) are optimized for the current version of Windows and not XP64.

So, unless you have specific software that takes advantage of 64-bit operations then there’s no reason to switch. Windows XP 32-bit will more than fine for your current setup for the time being.

Considering that you have a 64-bit processor… yes.

But a lot of other things I’ve heard go into it.  It is sorta overkill in some situations and has had XP SP2 comparable (ntn serious but irritating) problems with some software.

You shouldn’t get it for a few reasons. First, it’s in beta. If you’re willing to try out a beta OS for a new architecture, it shouldn’t be your daily driver system. Second, driver support is shakey at best. The fastest and most stable video drivers for example are the 32-bit ones and not all hardware is supported with 64-bit drivers. Lastly, you’re not going to get the fastest-running code just because you’re running in 64-bit mode. 32-bit code will actually run slower because it’s running on top of the WOW64 subsystem. You’ll see significant speed increases due to the new registers available to native 64-bit software, but my guess is that you don’t have a lot of native 64-bit software lying around…

Thanks, I agree…got to build it only recently after buying all it’s components over a 4 month period (and an additional 2 months before that pondering over what system to build…Thanks to Drachen for helping me then)

Thanks for the explanation…I was under the impression that a final (more stable) version had been released by microsoft…if I’d known it was in it’s beta stages I would not have even bothered with it.

Yes, they WILL rock eventually but not right now for normal users. Like Drachen and I mentioned, driver support is pathetic right now and there’s very few applications that are 64-bit ready. My interpretation of Rahul’s question was “will my mainstream software (i.e. games) run better on a 64-bit OS?”

Of course, the answer is no in many cases. The only company I’ve heard making any noise about AMD64/EMT64 optimizations is Epic for the Unreal (64-bit demos they’ve been showing). They have optimizations but again, they are hampered by the less than optimal drivers provided by both Nvidia and ATI.
