Well… following what is becoming a pattern, the HD in my TR2AP3 just died.  It would seem that the sector where the MFT is are dead… completely unreadable.  No previous warning, hangups, errors or noises.

The good part.  I have a full system ghost image in DVDs, not more than a week old, so it should be a breeze to restore.

The bad part.  I am going to Central Africa on Monday, so I doubt I can get a new drive shipped on time.  I guess I’ll have to travel with the machine provided by my employer… not nice

The question for those of you who have gone through the pain.  Which drive? Where to get the best price?

Any pointers much appreciated.

There’s really only one choice that’s readily available…the Toshiba 40GB 1.8” drive.

Here’s one major issue. If your system had the Hitachi 40GB drive then you’re out of luck since the Hitachi drive has a different connector cable than the Toshiba since it mounts on the side instead of the back.

ZipZoomFly.com has the 40GB drive the last time I checked.

Thanks for the info groovy.  I remember it was a Toshiba drive (from the system manager).  Unfortunately I can’t boot the machine to verify the model… I recall it was labeled Toshiba MK4… or something along those lines.  I once checked at CDW and they use to have them, but I can’t find them now.

Do anyone have the exact model at hand? I don’t want to open the machine just to check that when I will not be able to do the replacement until mid December.

You’re looking for the Toshiba MK4004GAH, I wonder if the 60GB models will be available in quantity by the time you replace it…

Yep… that’s the one.  Searching for the MK6006 but it does not seem to be as easy to find.
