I have been visiting the forums for quite some time (since May 2004), but have not registered until now….

I am planning on purchasing a Sony VAIO TR and wanted to know the differences between the following models:

TR3A
TR3AP1
TR3AP2
TR3AP3
TR5

and also which of those would you recommend, I really appreciate it.

For my case, I would say, get the latest one; which easily translates to the TR5MP/GP/AP/... Depending on the place you are residing in, there will be different options built in: eg. DVD writer, Bluetooth module, 768Mb Ram, etc…

The TR5 uses the 1.1Ghz ULV Processor, which is the faster one among the other models you have mentioned. (Perhaps just over 0.1 Ghz faster, which might not have such a significant impact.)

Another factor you would want to consider is the price that each of them are going for.

Hope this little bit of info offered here helps. I am not too sure about the other differences that the various TR models have other than the ones I mentioned above. (I am using the S series.)

I believe they are as follows:

TR3A—>  512MB, XP Home, CD burner & DVD reader combo
TR3AP1 (my system —>  same as TR3A, but with XP Pro
TR3AP2—>  1GB, XP Pro, CD burner & DVD reader combo
TR3AP3—> 1GB, XP Pro, CD & DVD reader/burner combo

TR5—>  SONY’s short lived replacement for TR3 series. Slightly faster CPU, combo CD/DVD burner.
