Given that it’s in the same price point as the OQO, the U (though physically a little bigger and lacking integrated Bluetooth) destroys the OQO in terms of performance (Pentium M ULV Dothan 1.1Ghz), memory capacity (512MB standard), larger screen (and higher resolution), and a much better cradle. The OQO’s cradle and bizarre cable is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.
At any rate, the price is still pretty high. I can’t see people scooping these things up at $2000. These kinds of devices need to fill the $1000-1500 gap for them to be more justifiable.
The battery life needs to be better too. 1.5-3 hours is simply not enough as standard. It’s worse than PDAs and even worse than most ultralight notebooks.
I think they’re thinking that if OQO is going to sell their model for $2000 then they can sell their model for the same…and they’re competitive on features. Of course, if OQO fails (likely) then Sony will probably just drop the U series pretty easily.

I can sort of see your point, but looking at this from a, you know it’s going to fail outlook, it just seems like a waste of money to me.
All the Eng O/S, all the demo units for the stores, etc…
Technically, not too much has changed. The VGN-U70 featured a Intel Pentium M 1 GHz with 64K/1MB L1/L2 Cache. The new U750P features a Intel Pentium M ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) 733 at 1.1 GHz and 2MB of L2 Cache, which could provide a noticeable boost in performance. Sticking with the times, Sony opted to stock the device with 512MB RAM instead of the 256MB that OQO or the Sony U50 include.
It sucks for those who imported a U70, only to have Sony release a better model, cheaper, here.
It’s kind of funny. I don’t see most people I know using something like this, but as a commuter who spends extended time on trains surfing the Net via GPRS (and has a spare Socket BT CF card floating around) I think the U would make a good TR replacement for me. I’m not sure I’d spend much more than $1000 for the device though.
I am still more impressed with the U101… when I’m in Japan if I can find one with a… reallllyyyy… low discount (considering I won’t be there for either 3 mths or 7 mths it should lose some more value) I am definitely gonna try to go for one… it just has that awesome MiniMe factor to it that i love. 8)

Where did you manage to try it out?
And whats so different about it? It’s a nipple that is in a better place for travelling…
It’s not this exact model i’m sure…an older version. One of my friends had one with his Picturebook. from what I remember the mouse was on top (two circles) so it’s made for handheld use…but you can’t type quickly if you hold it like that…if you put it down, its hard to reach the mouse.
