I m trying to order a memory upgrade for my TR2A.

In kingston, via the guide i end up with $79 for the 256 and $165 for the 512.

BUT.. in crucial for the 512 is offered to me via this link

for only $99

Can anyone please tell me for sure if this memory will work with my model and if it is the best option for me to have. 

They asked me what type i prefer. DDr or SDRAM.  Can this realy be true.  I mean my model should either support DDR or SDRAM.

Please correct me as needed.

I don’t believe that Crucial sells TR compatible memory. I could be wrong but you should definitely call them to verify that their product works with the Sony TR line. In their list of Sony notebooks, the TR is not listed.

I have found the Kingston memory (the $165 model) for less at Page Computers for $128.55 which is an extremely good price. I’ve ordered from them before and found them to be reliable.

But now i am little bit confussed.

I got all these from the live HELP support of crucial.com.

THey told me that the link i provided earlier is the memory for my TR2A and it has the folowong specs:

DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 • Non-parity • 7.5ns • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64
for the 256 MB

A few months ago I upgraded my office notebook, a compaq presario 2800 series and guess what.  The chips that i have have the same specs:
DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 • Non-parity • 7.5ns • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64

Can this be happening?  And why for the compaq it is cheaper on their site than the one for the sony they suggested?

Will I do any harm if I try the spare memory (256MB) form my compaq notebook on my SONY TR2A ?

Any help whould be greatly appreciated.

I think the problem you’ll find and why the memory for the TR is more expensive than for most laptops is because it is a physically different size. The memory that most laptops take is called SoDIMM where as the TR takes MicroDIMM which is more expensive.

Sure if the RAM is the same size then you can try it and it should work perfectly, however I imagine it’s not.

The specs you quoted could be for a lot of modules. I think it’s the form factor that’s at issue. The TR and the U101 use the same form factor and that picture on the Crucial site isn’t it. I just added 512MB to my TR this morning, so I should know. There is no notch on the bottom edge of the TR RAM where the RAM in the Crucial picture has it. It’s on the left side of the bottom edge. Odds are that the Compaq RAM will have the same problem. When/if you contact Crucial again, ask if it’s the equivalent part to Sony part PCGA-MM512U. Otherwise, the Kingston will work.

The Sony TR (and U101s) use a 172-pin MicroDIMM….this is the industry standard for subnotebooks. Many Japanese manufacturers use this size memory. So, be sure ask for that specificially.

I just double checked my Sony PCGA-MM512U sheet and indeed, it confirms that it is 172-pins.

I know grOOvy said that you need the 172 micro dimm.

I also couldn’t find a working to the kingston deal….for $99.  I know it might not be going for that price anymore….but I’m sure its less than sony’s price.

Erik posted the deal again in the other thread. It’s not $99 anymore but it’s still cheap at like $103. It’s only a few dollars more so it’s still a crazy good deal.

Does anyone know of any USA net stores who would deliver to a UK address. The site mentioned above doesnt take international orders so it doesnt help me. Plus the price of RAM in the UK for the same module which i can get for about 100 $ in the US, is about 100 quid.    ...almost an increment of 50 %. Bugger !

I had searched previously, and there is an indication that this same size memory will work with the Panasonic CF-T2.  Although the machine has an 855GM chipset, the specs say that it will only support up to 512MB total at 256MB per slot.  The price for this 512MB chip seems reasonable (although bizarrely flash memory is now cheaper than DRAM), but I was curious if anyone had tried this in a Toughbook T2?
