[quote author=“ECKAMUS”]On the windows XP platform, what would be some of the noticable differences with an increase from 1GB to 2GB? I sure there would be some improvement with graphics processing,
Yes, graphics processing is harddisk intensive, so it’s a candidate.
but would it improve gaming performance,
No, I don’t think so
video editing,
Oh yes!
and similar programs?
All in all you get less harddisk accesses.
Of course this doesn’t happen right after turning your notebook on. The caches and read-ahead buffers have still to be filled.
But after 5-10 minutes, it’s safe to assume that the most relevant filesystem metadata is loaded into memory. At 2GB, after half a day of working on the machine, you can really expect to have everything relevant in memory. Harddisk accesses will be reduced to a bare minimum where very seldomly used data is loaded (i.e., you open up a movie that you haven’t open up for the past 2 hours) and where you don’t care about your harddisk accesses anyway.
Plus, the fact that it would be jumping from a PC2100 to a PC2700 memory module.
If the chipset handles it gracely, than that’s a performance increase no matter what. Right after turning it on, no matter what you do. The CPU’s main task is to fiddle around with bits in your memory. If your memory’s faster, your computer is faster.
I am curious to know some more details.
Since the TR3 is my only computer at this time. I use it for everything.
Then go for it!
