i was wondering if the tr is a computer that could be used as a primary computer.  obvioulsy it is an awesome portable laptop and secondary computer.  but i wanted to make sure this system is all i would need if i was paying over 2000 dollars for it.  i am happy to hear from anyone. thank u.

Depends on what you do. If you just do normal web, email and word processing, it should be more than adequate. This may be argued, but if you intend to use it as a graphics workstion or a games machine, it would be advised to look elsewhere.

I haven’t really seen any true Desktop replacement in my mind.

Alienware has a Notebook that you can swap out the videocard…thats a step in the right direction.

For me, 99% of why I own a desktop is upgradability. Want more space…sure 200GB HD…more memory? 2GB and more…another optical drive released? $250 and under for the top dog…get my point?

Notebooks become outdated very quickly because they can only be upgraded to a point {at least the notebooks of today}. Eventually when notebooks outsell desktops and you can mix and match components, then and only then, will I consider a notebook to be a replacement for a fully upgradable desktop.

I use mine as my main and only computer.  Don’t play games so need for the fancy graphics card.  The 512 MB RAM, CD-RW/DVD, 30 GB HDD, wireless internet is all I need and it works fine.

The TR is my “primary” machine in that I spend the most time on it, but I have a desktop for gaming and heavy-duty graphics work. Notebooks are getting much better though, my previous VAIO was probably used about 30% of the time, where now I use the desktop 30% of the time.

If you don’t mind the looks/design, there is a desktop replacement that comes to mind. Check out Sager notebooks. PCtorque sells them. These notebooks are large and heavy but do alot.

I use mine as primary computer.
When I bought it I didn’t intend to but one I got it I found it good enough to spare me the hassle of managing yet another machine.
Due to my job I have to wrestle among four different pc but now I seldom use them and use the vaio 95% of the time.
Main use is for typical office work, plus software development tools which are very heavy.
At work I have an external keyboard, mouse and monitor and keep the vaio closed on my desk. There’s no docking bay so I purchased a small usb 2 hub and everything is plugged to it: when I get to work this leaves me with a minimum amount of plugging/unplugging.
Even on the go, after a couple of weeks of adjustment, I find the keyboard a display very up to the job.
I had your same worry when purchased the little vaio but I can tell you now, after several months of use, that they went away :D

i dont plan on using it as a game machine so i think that this will be fine for me.  i dont usually play too many up to date games anyways, i would prolly only try to play emulators if anything.  thanks a lot.
