Right now I am watching “you’ve got mail.”  One of my old time favorites with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

I love how the it shows old school 56k internet when AOL was running the internet show.

I am still on dial-up right now   I should get my broadband next week.

That movie does rock.  Strange though how the subtext of the movie goes against the creation of bigger more efficient and in the case of this movie more impersonal companies.  Personnally I didn’t cry when Meg Ryan’s book store closed…strange that I didn’t cry…I watched sleepless in seattle and I cried all night.

To go back to the 56k thingy, I remember dailing up, putting in PPP instead of SLIP and then it connecting at 48000….which always drove me nuts why I could never get 56000!

Of course this didn’t last long, for I was living in Philadelphia aka the home of Comcast.  Shortly there after they started performing tests with high speed cable internet.  They offered us residents the cable internet for 20 a month when they were still testing.  It worked beautifully.

Yeah frankly on a more personal term, i would love to have that kind of a relationship. Kind of just chatting on the internet with this person and never really feeling the need to know who she really was. It would be weird when i finally would meet her, but then that whole feeling of suspense more than makes up for it.

And the whole 56k thing… you gotta love the way that when she signs on it takes like 5 seconds… if only that were true in the real dial-up scene.

I didn’t start with AOL, but when AOL started I jumped on…that lasted about 2 years till they started policing themselves…then I left.

Well this rarely happens….see in that movie…Meg Ryan played a Movie Version of a normal person which means in real life she’s hot.  But..in real life a normal person who talks on the internet with forum nerds like us are usually ugly…or weird pediphile men…or some stuff…

As to AOL

I once used the AOL free 50 hours deal.  Yeah…it sucked, but my username was www007, which is a cool username.

Anybody here ever use “Bluelight” or the original Netzero/Juno?  These were free internet connections.  Bluelight was ran through Kmart and gave free dialup, and netzero/juno used to do the same…those were the days….  Back in the day when Altavista WAS the search engine to use, Northern Light was the backup search engine and Lycos was a mere baby web domain.  Geocities used to give out html’s liberally along with Angelfire, Tripod, and FortuneCity.  E-mails were only available at hotmail.com…  A time when porn websites had easily breakable usernames and passwords….ahhh those were the days.

My first dial-up account was through the University of Utah on a blazing 1200 baud modem. When 2400 became marginally affordable, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. 8)

the thing a love about this movie.. is the litle pop with the voice that says ” you have got a mail”.. i never got that on mine computer :(  :(

Yeah, there’s a time warp at the Utah border. Still, Salt Lake itself is reasonably cosmopolitan and you’re only 20 minutes from the mountains. Given that I can escape to Vegas whenever I want, it averages out pretty well.

As for when the snow flies, I dream of tropical beaches.

I might come to US next week, we should all arrange a TR forum meetup !!!!
