I would like to say im very disappointed with a few people here…. I offered my help to some people by createing an apache server to host some files to help and now after looking at the logs im disgusted to see exploits ran on the server (buffer overflows giving access to my whole box) Frankly i am very pissed about this, im currently in the midst of filtering out the IP’s from which they came for, i hope this isn’t just some dumb script kiddie cause if so i will track you down and you will be very sorry for your actions i promise you that. As for that im leaving this community which i though i can share my enthusiasm for the Sony TR series laptop. This has disgusted me.
Good bye to all.
Good luck with everything.
—-And to the bastard who ran the exploits, i sure to god hope you didn’t run them from unmasked ip’s.—-
(If anyone wants the ip’s ill post them for your enjoyment.)
[quote author=“jso902”]sorry to hear about that :(
i understand. lately there’ve been a lot of bizarre TR twists. especially on ebay.
anyhow too bad i didnt’ get to know you that much better. take care
Same here….I am sorry that happened to you….When I first came on this sight I thought it was great…and I still do….The regular memebers are really nice unlike most fourms I have been on.
For that happening to you I think it might have been a guest or something…..I haven’t seen any members interesting in doing things like that….Are standard of ethics are pretty high in this forum…

Hey i remember going to your server for some pictures. Why do you want to leave the community ,its a isolated incident with a few people trying to act smart. There is no real reason for you to just leave the community. I’d be pissed off if someone did that to me, but atleast try and help us find out who it is :?:
I’m very sorry to hear that, MortICi. I know there are many people who you just can’t really trust anymore, especially on the Internet, but I hope you don’t leave for good. If not for the information, then for the people that are honest and have substance and values that make the difference. Especially people who try to make the community a better place, like yourself.
The forum sure could use more help than hurt, and I hope there’s something we can help you with in the future.
Sorry to hear about your difficulties, though I think the site regulars here all seem like decent people. Maybe all the anonymous users that popped up and took a bunch of GMail accounts in the other thread were messing around with your server. Sorry to see you go. :|

I hope you’ll reconsider. I really doubt the source of your problems was the regulars here.
I share your disgust, but please remember that every community has its underbelly and lots of undesirables passing through. Given the nature of the web, any unprotected server is a target and there are uncounted sleezebags actively scanning IPs.

Maybe it’s just me, but if someone was able to run exploits on a box, the first person to blame is the sysadmin. Updates weren’t applied, unneccessary ports and services were open and listening or permissions were set incorrectly.

I agree, and i’d like to put my $0.02 in as well…don’t take your anger out on who you think did it…anyone who is worth anything won’t leave an IP trail, and if there is one, it will be fake. By you attacking their system you are (or could be) injuring a 3rd party…and if they have decent knowledge they will come back at you…and obviously you are open to attacks.
This kind of mentality isn’t the best method…just live and learn. If you want to offer hosting services, as I do, request the files be sent via e-mail first, this way you can control what goes in and out…

More importantly, you are culpable under the same laws and TOSs as the script kiddies. ISPs, both yours and theirs, take a dim view towards this sort of thing anyway.
I should have made it more clear as what to happened im sorry. Apprently they (multiple ips show it could have been one or more person) have tried to RUN the exploits but failed to accomplish anything. Fortunetly i know how to config apache and keep it secure for the most part and i am behind a firewall and a router and the ports are secured. The attacks were meant to give the attacker full access to the computer but they all failed as i can tell through the logs. I traced back the exploits and they were for an older version of apache which really had no effect on the server. Im sorry if you misunderstood what i said.
Also as for me tracking them down, the point is im not going to do anything i am just gonna try and figure out which ISP and location it came from and report it to the ISP. Im not here to harm, im here to help.
Also im sorry if i came off a bit harsh in my statements but i was frankly quite pissed to see that after haveing the server running for a few hours after posting, that it was attacked.
I will stick around i spoke out of anger for that im sorry.
