I have to say, if you are multi-tasking on a small machine like this its not good for your health, RSI WRULD’s. Ok if you are plugging into to a larger monitor and you have a separate screen and keyboard, fair enough. But why have one of these?
I was sitting on a train a few months ago travelling to London, a chap looked over and saw my TR1 MP, now I have to say, he and most of the carriage thought it was the best thing they had ever seen! If I had a few TR’s with me I could have made a fortune! Thing is the chap that wanted one was a mobile sales person. When I asked him how he would use it, he explained day in and out as his main machine. I had to advise, unless he is docking into an ergonomic workstation, it’s not for him. Portability is fine, but that’s what its for. Pity it wasn’t as fast as humanly possible anyway, I guess they will keep us buying….
So 512 should be plenty for short-term use, this is all a small machine is designed for. If you do prolonged work with a TR you will damage your health, as sure as anything. Believe me its health and safety is my profession, and I have seen it all.
I had a rare bit of spare time to research this issue and I found that with Windows XP having over 1 gig, unless you are gaming, which these things aren’t designed is a waste of time. What has been proven is that you will notice the difference when you upgrade from 256 to 512.
I do a fair bit of video editing with a Sony desktop P4 3 gig and 512, it does fine, as well as my TOSH laptop Celron 1.3, its splutters a little but it doesn’t drop a frame. I would guess 1 gig is wasted; the only people that win are the shops! 512 should hit fine. Anyways, I will report in and let you know. But here hoping that the extra 256 I am putting in will reduced the slight choppiness in DVD and mpeg video playback
