i have the tr2 setup pretty much the way i want it but…. i hate the partitions.  i dont want to reinstall everything to delete the partition because i have the computer working the way i like it for work etc.  i am scared i will mess things up.  so my question is as follows: 

i keep getting running out of space notice on drive c. so i have deleted unwanted programs but i still only have 2 gigs left on c and i want more space on c.  what can i move or delete that will give me more space?  i cant seem to find anything else to move except my doc.  i have my pst file in my docs and i am affraid if i move the pst file outlook 2003 wont work properly.

Here’s a suggestion: Move your page file from C to D:

1. Defrag D:\  (even if it tells you it doesn’t need to)
2. Right-click on My Computer -> Properties and click the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button in Performance, Click the Advanced tab and then the Change button.
3. Click on the D:\ drive and click the Custom Size radio button. In the boxes type in a number between 1500 and 2500. Make sure both boxes have the same number. This will be the size the file takes up on D:\. 1500 should be fine for you usage, but for your RAM size 2500 is the usual recommendation.
4. Click Set.
5. Click on the C:\ drive and select the No paging file radio button. Then click the Set button.
6. Click OK a bunch of times and reboot. You might want to defrag C: just for the hell of it afterwards.

I’m not sure if you’re in the mood for spending money on this but I personally use one of two tools: Powerquest’s Partition Magic (now owned by Symantec) or Acronis’ Partition Expert 2003.

Both programs allow you to easily adjust the size of partitions dynamically without needing to reinstall the OS or any of your applications. So, as long as your drives aren’t too full you can move free space from one partition to another without affecting anything.

I used Partition Magic on my TR when I first got it and resized my partitions from the default 15/15 to 13/17 since I store all of my data (and paging file for that matter) on the D: drive.

I use these kinds of programs on all of my systems so I had it laying around. I still think it’s worth the investment since it makes your life super easy. I would also say that they are extremely reliable as I’ve never had any problems during resizing…of course, having a backup is always recommended.

Is there any way to move my entire user folder to the D drive?

If it’s My Documents (and all subdirectories) then it’s extremely easy. Right click on your My Documents folder in Explorer and go to the properties. You will see that you can move your My Documents folder anywhere you want. You will have to logout momentarily while it does the move but everything works when you log back in.

I’m anal and have created My E-mail, My Movies, My DV, etc. and stuck them under My Documents. The one good thing about this is that it’s insanely easy to backup my system. I just tell my backup software to backup the D: drive periodically so that all my data is backed up.

Two questions come up from this though:

(1) what am i actually doing here if i do this?  moving 3 gig of data to the D drive? 

(2) is there any downside to doing this?

(3) you said both boxes need to be the same #?  when i went in to check just now before i did anything the numbers were different.  it has initial size 1524 and max size 3048.  are those the boxes that need to be changed?

if i move the mydocuments folder to D and my outlook pst file is in the mydocuments folder and it gets moved will that mess it up?  or will i have to redirect outlook to d?  and if i do have to redirect outlook to d, how do i do that?

Regarding the two partitioning programs…you only need one of the two. Both are equally good and easy to use so it doesn’t really matter which one you get.

If you move the My Documents location, Outlook should still be ok if it was pointing to the My Documents location in the first place. If for some reason the file can’t be found you can simply “re-point” Outlook to the correct position. It won’t mess anything up.

Regarding Drachen’s tips…you are not actually resizing anything. Basically, you are freeing up more space on C: by moving the page file over to D:. This is an “easy” way to reclaim disk space as the page file is using 1.5-2.5GB of hard disk space. By telling Windows to use the D: drive instead, you will clear up space on the C: drive and you won’t need to repartition.

this is CRAZY!  i didnt even do the page file thing yet.  all is did was delete some programs like ms2004 money and a couple of other things about 200MB each to reclaim space it said i had 2 gig avail.  i loaded on a nero but had a problem so i did a restore to the previous point then i loaded nero again had the same problem and restored again.  then i used a nero cleaning tool that i got from tdk tech support ahwile back and i might have cleared the temp files (not sure though) now for some crazy reason its says my c drive has 6 gigs avail.  i have know idea what the hell got deleted but that is a hell of alot of space.  where could that have come from or how can i figure out where the extra space is from??????????

A page file is also synonymous with a paging file, swap file, or virtual memory. The concept is that the operating system uses part of your hard disk as memory. This is virtual memory. So, let’s say you have 256MB of actual RAM memory. Then you load up a bunch of programs that use 300MB of memory. Common sense tells you that is impossible since you’re exceeding the RAM that you have. When you’re swapping between the different programs you have open, the operating system then maps the non-active program to the hard disk and retrieves (or “pages”) memory out of the virtual memory. This is the “swapping”. The bad thing about swapping is that it tends to slow down your computer because the hard disk is so much slower than RAM and you’re constantly forcing it to swap back and forth. That’s why it’s good to have lots of RAM. So, even if you have lots of RAM, Windows likes to use virtual memory and by default it likes to create pagefiles that are more than 2x the amount of RAM that you have.

Oh, there isn’t a downside to moving it.

The reason why you cleared up a lot of space is that you probably had a ton of temp files that weren’t deleted until you ran that utility. That’s another bad thing about Windows is that programs don’t always do a good job of deleting temporary files. Whenever you install new programs, many installers copy a lot of files (if not all) to your temp directories and they don’t always clean up afterwards. Over time (as in your case) it can add up to a lot and you won’t really notice it since Windows buries your temp files under a bunch of sub-directories.

I normally remap all of my TEMP files to C:\TEMP so that it’s easier for me to see where the files are and delete them if need be. You can change the location by editing the System properties in the control panel.

4. Highlight the TEMP variable. Click edit. Enter the new folder.
5. Highlight the TMP variable. Click edit. Enter the new folder.
6. Reboot.

Or just Start -> Run and type in %TEMP%.

i am getting all confused sorry to be so thick!  whats the best way for me to delete the temp files?  without moving folders etc…  just every once in a while delete the files?

Well, the easiest thing to do is to move the TEMP folders to somewhere easy to check…like C:\TEMP and then periodically delete everything in there.

Or, if you don’t want to move your temp directory then you can make a shortcut on your desk to your current TEMP directory. You can do this the standard windows way by finding the directory and right-click drag the folder to your desktop and choose to create a shortcut. Then you can easily access the directory and delete everything in it.

By default, your temp files are located in the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp

Of course UserName is whatever your user name is. Also know that the Local Settings directory is hidden by default so you won’t see it unless you choose to show Hidden Folders and Files in Tools -> Folder Options.

thanks for walking me through this!!  i did the short cut way.  the last question i have is can i delete all whats in there?  right now there is only 4mb.  which is crazy to think that i had 4gig in there before i did what i did the other day.  is it really possible that 4 gigs of space were being taken up from in there?
