I got tr3a, only bought it like a week ago.
It was working one min and next this start happening:
When ever i on it, it makes clinking noise every time and a messeges appears on screen saying “No OS found” when i try F5 or another opertion nothing works. I think my HD has failed.
What you pro think about this problem?
Also What hd is compatible with tr3a, is Hitachi Travelstar C4K40 compabtable?
Thanks

I also have a TR3A. It happened to me once when I was trying to recover the comper to factoy settings. I got the message ” No OS found”.
Try hitting F10 and recover the disks to factory settings. Thats what I did. Maybe you’ve messed with some important system files by accident.

It does sound like a bad hard drive whan you mention both the clicking and the “OS not being found” occurred at the same time.
As to the second question, I believe only Hitachi and Toshiba make the 1.8” hard drives (I think that was the size) that can be used in our TR computers. Travelstars arn’t used which is a good thing considering often they would die (Deathstar).

It’s new enough I’d send it back as defective and ask for a replacement.

I bought it from states when i was back there, I dont know what to do i can either fix it myself or sent it back?
Also should i go for:

2. Hitachi-HGST 1.8” Travelstar C4K40 HTC424040F9AT00 08K1393 U100 (40gb, 4200rpm, mb)

From what I’ve heard the Toshiba drives are more reliable than Hitachi.

All these hard disk problems have certainly prompted me to think what if ? My TR is very new and i use it all the time, i do have a backup pc but i dont know how i’d be able to survive without it if the HD ever fails. I dont know why i make it sound like its just waiting to happen, but all these posts about HD failing. Shouldnt sony do something before making such an expensive machine , isolate the problem about the HD or ask hitachi or toshba to sort their parts.

From owning one and hanging out here for a few months, I feel the TR is a durable little workhorse. The hard drive seems to be about the only non-self-inflicted hardware concern. Because of that, I think we tend to be overly aware of every little sound emanating from the case. While drive failures get reported and strike fear in our hearts, consider that TR World has over 500 members most of whose machines seem to be working just fine. The last two reports were a machine which had been dropped and this one, only a week old.

Just to let you know this happned to me 2 weeks ago and trust me it’s a dead hard drive. If you still have warranty send it back in, if not you can order a new hdd from zipzoomfly or newegg.com (i bought the hitachi one since the toshiba requires a different small ide cable which you would have to order from sony) if you wish to do it your self which isn’t hard at all trust me.
I have pics available and there is a how-to on takeing the TR apart on the web page.
If ya need help just let me know.

Btw can’t you send it back in for warranty, as it’s still brand new?

it would take me 2 long weeks or more if i send it to US, also they said they will first check and see if it is personal fault or technical fault. If persoanl fault i have to pay. Which is a long procees.
I just want to ask when i do get my hd inside my laptop what whould i have to do then? would i need to install windows then.

Some good soul should make an image of the recovery DVD and share it with us thru a P2P netwowk like edonkey2000. This would help a lot of desperate people in this forum, including me. I had the same problem ordering de recovery disk, since I live in Brazil and Sony doesn´t ship to other countries.
