Newby TR User here!
I picked my mine from Heathrow on Tuesday & it’s barely been off ever since!

I have been reading another post on this topic, but didn’t find an answer - I see fron the other posts that the DVD Writer option on the TR3 is basically a Panasonic/Matsushita UJ-812 OEM DVD Multi Writer

From what I gleaned from CDR-Info http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.asp?RelatedID=4393
This device can also read and write DVD-RAM

My question is, has anyone had any first hand experience of this?

I have the TR2MP, which is at the moment the only choice for the UK market.  I would be interested in upgrading the unit, if I could guarantee its compatablility with the DVD-RAM discs created from my Panasonic HS2 consumer DVD recorder and vice-versa.please excuse me if this question has come up elsewhere.

I’m looking forward to hanging out here some more, you people seem really friendly :D

I’d really appreciate some pointers on this, as I’d love the new drive, but don’t want to fork out if the RAM’s been neutered by Sony.

It seems you have baffled everyone….....

I too, am in the market for a new dvdrw drive. And since Sony Direct has unreasonably doubled the price of their dvd drives, I have been trying to find a replacement in other places.

doesn’t support DVD-RAM
They disabled this function

dvd-ram discs come in the double-sided (9.4GB capacity) and single-sided (4.7GB) varieties in both cartridge (provides additional protection) and non-cartridge types. i haven’t seen any non-cartridge types.

U can take off that jacket… just like a normal Disk!!
even u can buy the OPTODISC DVD-RAM, this one without that cartridge

they have some @ newegg..  :shock:

And now you know why it’s a dead technology…

Has anyone done the swap of the cdrw drive in a TR for the UJ-812? I can’t find a reference to it searching.

there are many forum members that have done the dvd-rw swap..

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you happen to know:

  if most people using the Panasonic/Matsushita UJ-812?
  are there any goofy driver issues that come up in doing the swap or does everything happily work with XP?
  any comments on using it with multiple regions (i.e. firmware upgrade)?

most people are using the Matsushita UJ-812. it runs a bit louder than the original drive. other than that i have no problems with it.

Thanks linc. One last question:  where did you pick one up from? I can’t find anywhere that has it.
