[quote author=“jso902”][quote author=“dbs”][quote author=“linc”]thank god i’m not an audiophile..
I’m not sure these are so much for audiophiles as the look-how-rich-and-cool-I-am crowd. Once you a acheive a reasonably flat response over the audible spectrum, with low distortion, esoteric improvements are mostly heard only in the imagination.
Given that human hearing degenerates over time, these units would be best utilized by children and teenagers.
unfortunately i have to disagree. listen to a good source, amp and headphone and you’ll realize the difference. it’s like playing a guitar. play a 200$ one and then touch a 2000$ one. it’s a world of a difference. The consistency, the accuracy etc etc is amazing. i almost wanted to junk my guitar after playing some high-end guitars.
I certainly won’t argue your point insofar as musical instruments go. There seems to be a measure of art, craftmanship and serendipity involved in the making of a superior instrument.
On the reproduction side it’s primarily measureable specifications. Most peoples preferences seem to vary from perfect, flat reproduction. Vinyl buffs like the coloration from the media and stylus. Rockers like overbearing base.
Most folks won’t argue the difference between a $300 Kmart special and a $1-2k tuner/amp/speaker system. Somewhere between that point and 5-10-30 grand the law of diminishing returns has long since set in. Just as somewhere between a $30 headphone and the $3000 Sony any real improvement becomes neglegable and is in the mind of the beholder. Just my opinion.
