[quote author=“Anonymous”]so if that’s the case, we should see new X505 soon, right? as soon as new 05 model lineup, i think they will come out a new one with the new chipset and dothan, just like next T. i hope the next T/TR will be a combo of both, camera, mic and action button along with new chipset.
Not always the case…if the x505 did not sell well they could cancel it and not replace it with anything…

Well, the HD can most likely be upgraded. I have an extra 40 GB 1.8 drive, when I open her up for the keyboard replacement, I just might do that. I agree though, this is a business machine (I think I mentioned that in the review) and not a portable entertainment unit.
Erik
Looking at the inside of the X505 the tolerances seem pretty tight. The small hard drive was a bit of a bummer for me, but then I realized that Sony probably went with the 20GB model because it only has one drive platter and is thinner than the 40GB two platter model. Do post when you get it opened up, I might get one for the road if you can upgrade the hard drive. That would actually make the lack of optical drive a bit more bearable, since I would rip DVDs to watch and keep CD images on the drive.
[quote author=“Anonymous”]tifosi, just out of curiosity, do you happen to know the origination of the shipping? was it from icube office in japan or usa? u can probably see it from the label, right?
thanks.
I know, without looking, that it stopped in Cali first…I think to reformat and setup English OS…plus I don’t have to deal with customs if it doesn’t go directly to me.
Does anyone have pics of the TR and X505 together? I have not seen an X505 in person. I would love to see the size differential. I know tifo sold his, so he may not be able to deliver on this request.

Guest - I may be wrong about where they do the English conversion, but I know it stopped in Cali first…for whatever reason. Is this a problem, I am confused at why this is such a big deal?
thanks for the wonderful review erik, it’s sounds quite thorough and fair, the two ideas needed for a good review. i’m glad that the x505 suits you so well (minus the keyboard), i’m pretty sure that most tr users consider the built in optical drive non-optional, but for your specific needs it seems like the perfect fit. i was able to try out the x505 myself at the sonystyle store in southern california, and i must say that it wasn’t too my liking. i just felt that it was too fragile and the keyboard didn’t do it for me. knowing how tough it is to take a leap of faith and buy this pricy comp without actually playing with it first hand, i commend you on your bold moves and am happy to see it work out for you. have fun with your new toy. i wish i could experience my first TR week all over again.

Thank you. According to that video review, the CF version is a little stronger then the US one…it’s hard to imagine becuase this feels real fragile to me.
Yes, it was a pretty big risk, especially since if I didn’t like it I couldn’t get my TR back…
All seemed to work out in the end though.
Sony Vaio - Yeah, I might do a full restore and remove the partition once I can try to swap the keyboard.
Its to bad they dont make that wifi card bundled and unlocked for wireless gsm/gmrs networks. the new tmobile cards have the wifi b/g bundled ... i dont get why these guys dont offer unlocked cards in the same fashon… anywho; looks like the battery is a bummer to.
Someone e-mailed me about testing the speakers, so I did. They are about the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard. I am almost positive that there is only one speaker as well.
It seems the speaker is on the right hand side under the keyboard. It is not very loud and distorts quickly when you try and increase the volume to a decent level.
I personally don’t care, but some of you out there might. Using headphones it sounds perfect.
