I decided to take the final upgrading plunge with my new S18GP Notebook. It currently has a 1.6ghz banias processor, but as of tomorrow it will have a 2.0ghz dothan processor (if i put it back together right…. I’ll let you know the outcome)... A local computer store had the new processor at 20% off, so I just had to grab it… I upgraded the ram the day after I bought it to 1GB, the hard drive yesterday to a 80GB 5400rpm and then the processor tonight…. Man I wish that sony australia had a customise option to their vaios!... I’m hoping that the new processor will take some of the load of the 32mb 9200 radeon…. (which performs alot faster than expected already)...
By the way, for all those interested, the bluetooth module from the TR doesn’t work in the S series… I tried it last night… The blue light comes on, but for some reason windows xp wouldn’t detect it…. The Sony control software that allows you to turn the bluetooth and wireless on and off would turn the light on and off, but that was about all…..

It sounds like you are doing some impressive upgrades…I am sure everyone on this site would love to see some pics….
I can’t believe you are going to upgrade the proccessor….Ballsy…..
Can’t wait to see or hear the outcome….rock on dude….
I’ll post pics tomorrow after it’s all working…. if it doesn’t work, then I won’t be on the forum for a while… or at least as long as it takes for my laptop to come back from sony customer care…..

Why couldn’t you just pop back the original 1.6 with some thermal….and be back up and running. :?:
Well… I did the upgrade… went very well indeed… It was very straight forward and I had no hickups along the way… I put some thermal paste on the processor, and now the fan doesn’t come on as much as when it had the 1.6ghz chip in there….
I’ve noticed a big increase in responsivenss within windows…. bootup time has been slashed… everything opens on command…. I did the upgrade coz I run VMware running windows 2003 server within windows xp…. It has made a huge difference…. Both machines run really well at the same time… I even ran doom 3 with the win2k3 server running in the background with no slowdown at all…. Hehehe as you can tell.. I’m very happy about the upgrade… I’m just glad I didn’t need a new bios or anything…. I’m gonna do some benchmarks and I’ll post them when I’m done… with a comparison…

Nice job. VMware running Server 2k3 def. taxes the system…you should certainly see a difference. Have you tried MS’s VPC?

Great Job!!!! Now you can update your signature with your awesome mod…..I can’t wait to see the new benchmarks….

Nice. I’m surprised that the performance difference you noticed was that marked. But at least it’s working the way you wanted. Im actually working on a little project that’s sort of the opposite of yours. I will be attempting to “downgrade” my S170s CPU to a Low Voltage Banias processor to see if that changes the way the heatsink/fan works on the S. Mine actually isn’t that bad ever since I put the thermal paste on it but I wanted to see if there were other effects (i.e. longer battery possibly, less heat, etc.)

Don’t forget, there might be a slight weight savings as well
No….Pentium M (Dothan type) processors 1.5GHz-2.0Ghz all have the same thermal characteristics and use the “regular” voltages and consume the same amount of power. I will be getting a Low Voltage Pentium M (as opposed to the Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M found in the TR) running at 1.2GHz. The newer Dothan based LV Pentium M is 1.4GHz but I couldn’t find one.
The current chip at 1.7GHz (Dothan) draws 21W (max) or 7.5W (min). The 1.2GHz (Banias) draws 12W (max) or 6W (min).
So, we’ll see what happens…i won’t know until it arrives. At any rate, I’m happy since I got the CPU for a steal.

Well crime never pays so watch out for the flashing blue lights
If ‘stealing things’ on eBay is a crime then I am guilty as charged! I think no one knew what the item was so only two people bid on it and I sniped the other bidder in the last 5 seconds.

Sniping…how I love thee…
Groovy, did you do it the honest way, ie staying up and hitting refresh…
or
did you use a site/program to snipe for you?
On a similar note, did anyone see that ebay auction with the business woman bidding on a pocketbook and constantly running out of the meeting to check on it? Lol.
