ok say some uses my visa card and buys something worth 1000 bucks from newegg. I find out a few days later and call up newegg and newegg issues me a credit for 1000 bucks. Someone would definitely make a $1000 loss here…Visa or newegg and I’m sure they would want to trace the frauds…wouldn’t they?...it’s a decent sum of money afterall. 

you have to first catch the unauthorized charges then prove the charges wasn’t made by you. my point is either way the money is in their (visa and newegg) pockets..the burden of proving it’s a fraud or not remains on the consumer. plus it is very unlikely for companies to issue credit without any proof or investigations..it can take up to 90 days before they can issue any refund or credit.

All this talk makes me want to cancel all my credit cards.  I have too many.  I haven’t been screwed yet.  But, it sounds like it is very common.

Is there any insurance you can buy to protect yourself from this….

Something similar just happened to me last month. I tried buying something and the card was declined. I thought this odd since I basically don’t keep a balance month-to-month on that card. I got a statement the next day (seredipitously) and saw a bunch of charges to mexican and spanish companies that I knew I didn’t make. I called the credit card company and they issued me a new one and reversed the charges. I had to sign a pair of affidavits and mail them back to the company.

Don’t call newegg about the fraud. Call the credit card company. They are the ones that actually deal with it.

Several off my CCs have no online hassle…if any charge online is fake (you tell them) you automatically get credit back…they investigate, if you actually did the charges, they charge you back.

Everytime I use allofmp3 they call me to verify that I want to send the funds to Russia.

Federal law limits your liability to $50. Most credit card companies won’t actually charge you that $50 and assume the liability themselves. It’s actually a very safe way to buy something.

It’s issued through a bank, not through newegg. I guarantee you that when you call the number on the back of the card it goes to MBNA or something. At one time, I had a Sierra Online card, but the card was issued by MBNA. It was my first.

  my discover card doesn’t allow me to ship items over X amount to a non-billing address unless i specificly have them add the address to their database.

for example, when i bought my TR and had it shipped to my gf, discover would not give money to the company unless my gf’s address was preauthorized by me.  discover and the company called me 3 times!  it was quite a hassle playing phone tag, but i the extra security made me feel better.
