Hi all,
I’m new to these boards. I’ve been lurking for quite some time. I first came to the boards because my beloved TR2A combo drive didn’t play DVDs consistently and I wanted to know if other TR owners had the same problem. I’d insert a brand new DVD and it would make a series of noises followed by choppy playback. If I then inserted the DVD into a portable DVD player or DVD player connected to television it would work like a charm.
Sony’s support was no help. I got to a level 2 technician and he told me I was having problems because I installed WinDVD5 and Nero Platinum so I restored my system to the factory software and still had problems. I whinned enough and finally Sony told me to send it in for repair.
I just called Sony for an update on my repair and it turns out quite a few items were replaced. I asked the rep for details and she said the drive was replaced and the motherboard along with some other stuff. I’m glad I persisted because my warranty is up next month.
I paid too much for this laptop for the drive to have choppy playback. I got half and half performance overall and I bought the laptop days after it was officially released by Sony. I baby my lappy and haven’t dropped it or mis handled it so I couldn’t understand why the DVD/CDRW drive was giving so much trouble. Other than the drive the lappy is a beautiful system.
So please folks, if you’re having similar problems force Sony to look at your laptop and get repairs if you’re still under warranty.
I hope when I get it back all is well as I have a long flight to Italy in a couple of months and I don’t need to chug along a seperate DVD player.
