ahwwww… this is not happeningg.. I dont know how practical it is, but i looks really cool to me.
well i guess they will make something else to substitue this u50/70 model.Hopfully it’ll be a better one.
well..imo sony probably thought the u50/u70 may be ahead of its time for the american public. the demand for handtops just isn’t enough for them to even consider the us market. i would be seriously consider the u50/u70 if the price were more acceptable. unless money isn’t an issue..the price is always going to keep the demands down.
I never thought this would be a big seller. The current Windows requires a keyboard…until they use a new OS or windows becomes more ‘pen’ friendly, all these non-keyboard devices will fail, IMO.
Their other mistake was not shipping it with Tablet PC installed and with their own software (although understandable since their software was also for double byte input).
If it came out in the US it would have to have Tablet PC installed as it made the device much more usable and useful.

Well, yeah…had they installed Tablet it might have helped. Their Decuma for the Clie still doesnt fair well (IMO) to MS Recognition in their PPCs…I don’t think the Sony software is all that good…they should stick with stuff thats already been written.
I don’t disagree that better software is better, (I think I learned that in college) but I’m still not sold on the tablet form factor, even if the prices were reasonable and text input software was not an issue. They’re just too big to be carried around comfortably and if you don’t want to hold something while you work, a notebook is a better form-factor with an objectively better physical text input system.
I guess the thing we should be getting out of this is to be thankful that the TR lasted over a year before being deprecated. :|

I could well be overly optimistic; but given the lackluster “improvements” in the T, I think the TR may hold value better than if there were an actual upgraded TR model.
IMO the u50/u70 was a glorified pda. I owned one pda in my life and I didn’t like it. Even with the link software it was just a pain. I rather have one device like I am using the TR and then 1 desktop and thats it….
The lack of a usable keyboard was a big downer for the U70. If they switch back to the U101 design as a clamshell handtop, that seemed to be more popular with the mini-portable crowd. I know Erik is still looking for the perfect handtop. So am I. Haven’t seen it…....yet.
It’s funny, I got my Oct. issue of Maximum PC today (its still being routed to NJ then forwarded to MI ) and they reviewed the U series.
The headline reads: “Sony Vaio-U50: The Future of handhelds? We think so”.
I know they didn’t mean that the U50 was the end-all be-all, I just find it funny that they said its the future and the U50 was canceled as the mags were being printed…
I give a lot of weight to what MaximumPC says (less now then years ago when it was Boot) and I think this was just a decent idea (on Sony’s part) that just went a wee bit wrong.
