Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM), which uses magnetism to store data vs. electrical charges, promises devices that are:

Non-volatile
Inexpensive (once volume produced)
Fast
Low Power

As well, MRAM integrates several functions onto one chip making it suitable for smaller form factors. If the hype is true, MRAM threatens to replace conventional memories like DRAM, SRAM and Flash.

As long as it is “solid state”, and supplants hard drives as a bootable medium, then I will be happy.  They can call it whatever they want.

Me, too. I thought it interesting how MRAM is a tangental spinoff of the research that gave us the amazing hard drives we have today. Credit where credit is due, IBM research has a good track record.
