[quote author=“Drachen”]Remember the discussions that started our little running joke? The same discussion is happening at Anandtech , with very little defense of flash…
Go get ‘er Ray. 8)
Yeah, speed is a concern. It is getting better, though. I still maintain that we will soon (18-24 mos) be able to boot from a flash drive and use mechanical HD for storage or a ‘D’ drive.
[quote author=“TruthSeeker”][quote author=“tifosiv122”][quote author=“TruthSeeker”]I don’t use CF, either. However, I’m glad to see prices like that. :D
You don’t? Its the most widely (and cheap) used flash memory…
Erik
Sorry. I’m an MS only guy.
One thing I’m fairly sure of. Flash won’t take over the world at MS prices.

Yeah, it looks as if CF and SD will emerge as the dominant form factor for Flash. If I had to pick one it would be SD. I have so many MS cards because I have so many Sony gadgets.
This will be a slow process, gentlemen. I think you will see microdrives become bootable, then flash. I understand that everyone will not jump on the bandwagon. We understand this because not everyone digs the TR like we do. Flash supplanting mechanical drives will take a much longer time to happen. Speeds need to increase and prices must come down. Those two things are happening before our eyes. It is only a matter of time before Flash lures people to try it out. Then its over.

Good long time, methinks. Can’t recall where, someone talking about a 160GB drive for $49 after rebate. We’re impressed when we see 2GB of flash for $137…
My 1987 Toshiba T1000 had MS DOS 2.11 in ROM. Provided a fast diskless boot. Your dream is not new…
I wonder how big a 160GB flash drive would be.

Yeah, and I think Windows will emerge as the dominant desktop operating system.
I’m sure Bill Gates can rest easy now, it was a close race between Apple and MS

The point we are missing here is that you do not need 160GB to boot windows and run a few key apps. I only take up 7GB to run my TR. Thats all!! Any movies or music in large volumes is on my desktop or some sort of external storage device which flash is not suited for.
Sometimes I think you guys are argumentative for the sake of being argumentative.
