tifosiv: Unfortuantely I don’t have the money to afford paying $30 a month for a T-Mobile internet plan… and, remember, adults (in other words people who have jobs and therefore earn money) aren’t the only ones that are into technology.
Yeah, but add up the price of a dial-up account + hotel bills for the call (even if its local most charge) and you might as well give it to your cell phone provider.
Erik
What are you talking about? Dial-Up? Hotel Bills? I mean I can’t afford to pay $30 a month period. If I’m away at a hotel (I usually make the reservations for my mom) so I try to get them where they have room ethernet or WiFi. And dial-up account? Why would I have a dial-up account period? I have DSL. The main reason I would want the T-Mobile and Sierra Wireless/BT cell is for the conveniece of having internet anywhere… road, mall, movies, school, Starbucks, w/e.
On another note: I don’t understand why people pay $20 a month for the stupid T-Mobile HotSpots thing when they can simply get a BT phone and add the $20/month to their cell plan for unlimited wireless internet anywhere instead of just at a Starbucks or Borders (etc). There is no logic in that.
I want to go that route but my mom is making excuses about not wanting to sign a contract with another sell provider since I have Verizon right now…(and am lucky to have gotten her to get me that (last year)). It sucks to be unable to get a job OR drive. :|
OK, guys, I’ll let you keep the ethernet port and modem, but in turn you’ve gotta show some compassion for the webcam users.
It’s nice to see the bluetooth logo on the picture, but I’d really like to see it in the written specs…
One thought on the webcam. I understand that many security concious companies are going so far as to ban cellphones with cameras. I can imagine how excited security could get over the TR camera. If corporate happiness is what it takes to maintain momentum in the TR>T evolution, I guess we can’t complain… more than normal.
i think this is just a miniature underpowered type S or TR-in-another-case. plus i don’t really like its design - the battery or whatever that is that sticks out from the end is gonna annoy me

You’d be amazed at how handy having a spare dial-up account can be as the last resort for necessary connectivity. As someone who travels regularly, it’s almost indispensable for those rare circumstances where there’s no cell coverage, no ethernet and no wi-fi access. Of course, it’s becoming less and less of an issue but it’s still necessary.
The reason why some people will spend $20/month for T-Moblie Hotspot over the $20/month T-Mobile unlimited bandwidth plan is TOTALLY logical. The Hotspot connection is broadband. The T-mobile unlimited data plans for phones is a GPRS modem connection with a maximum 56k connection (although feels more like 40k due to GPRS latency).
So, it’s really apples and oranges. For people who need high bandwidth, Hotspot is the only way to go and more and more Hotspots are popping up. For people who need an occasional connection but need it anywhere then the GPRS connection is more ideal. You’ll have to wait a bit for e-mail and and may have to surf with less pages open but you have the flexibility to do it at more locations. You also mention that people “just need to get a BT phone”. That’s an additional cost for most people. Also, you can’t surf and talk at the same time with the GPRS connection.
[quote author=“babahi”]Looking at the T pics… that tiny space bar really sucks
Well, you don’t have to worry about that. The tiny space bar is a JDM thing. The Japanese QWERTY keyboard has extra keys near the space bar to switch input modes (romaji, hiragana, katakana, etc). On US or European models, these keys are not there and thus the space bar is longer. It’s always like this.

I can. No problem originating or receiving voice calls while the TR is online via bluetooth.
Could be carrier or phone related. I’ve got an SE T68i and service with AT&T, at least until my contract runs out. Data prices are ridiculous but I’m locked into 1500 minutes for $45 so I can’t complain too much.

Ok, that’s interesting to know. On a T-Mobile GPRS connection, an incoming call with temporarily pause the network connection while you talk and then resume once you’re done giving the illusion that you never lost a connection. Your data will resume once it’s connected but during the call it’s paused. It’s interesting that AT&T’s works differently…i’ll keep that in mind at the next “upgrade” cycle.

My $75 a month WMIS Cable internet provides me with useless tech support between the hours of 10am and 5pm whenever they want
How nice for you. Don’t you just love playing monopoly with those guys?
Since I’m on the fringe for DSL, I’m only getting 700 down. Still, it’s fast enough, usually, and for $40 I can’t complain. The 30 hours dialup is just a nice bonus.

For what it’s worth, the T68 has two sets of signal bars. One for GSM and one for GPRS. I’ll run a test myself. If it does pause the connection, I’ve never noticed it. I’ll let you know.
AT&T is horribly overpriced for data services. I locked into the introductory offer when they first offered GSM here. At that time there were holes all over and hundreds of miles of no-bar freeway. 500 bonus minutes and their mMode data service were part of the sweetener. Their current plans, particularly with data, aren’t that hot.
I lied. Thanks for the heads up gr00vy. I’m never online via GPRS for very long and never noticed it. The ATT propaganda assures you can still receive and make voice calls while using the data service… and you can, sort of. I might go dig around the ATT site and see where they hid the fine print.

You can. It’s just that you can’t transmit/recieve a data frame at the same time your trasmitting/recieving a voice frame. What they mean is that you don’t have to close your GPRS connection to answer or make a call.
